The Department of Fisheries ensures that there's enough fish for the residents of Thailand. The agency develops policy for fishery production in Thai waters and overseas, exportation, and the cultivation of fish in controlled conditions. The department maintains the goal of producing annually about 2 million tons of fish in Thailand and another 2 million tons in concert with other countries with 1 million tons designated for export. The Department of Fisheries also conducts research, promotes cooperation with other states, and develops occupations in the industry. The agency traces its roots to the beginning of fisheries management for tax and tariff collection and fishery production in Thailand in 1901.
