CHECKERS INDIA News
Not only Checkers … it’s time for Shoprite Sixty60!
- Shoprite Group is launching its Sixty60 on-demand grocery delivery service at 19 Shoprite stores across eight provinces following a successful pilot in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
- Despite the addition of new locations and categories, the penetration of Sixty60 across Checkers' store base has plateaued at around 601 locations.
- Certain locations may not achieve 100% coverage due to limitations in staging a fleet of delivery bikes and existing services in some areas.
- Extending Sixty60 to the Shoprite network was part of the group's plan, evidenced by the decision to purchase the Pingo joint venture.
- The phased rollout of Shoprite Sixty60 aims to deliver excellence and efficiency to new locations, with a focus on meaningful consumer impact and seamless logistics.
- Pilots at Shoprite Atlantis and Shoprite Jabulani have yielded positive results, influencing the expansion of the service to Shoprite Kleinmond and Shoprite Kriel.
- Shoprite leverages data from its Xtra Savings rewards program to tailor the rollout of Sixty60 based on customer profiles and community needs.
- Growth of Sixty60 sales has moderated, with a 47% increase from July to December, creating over 14,000 jobs since its launch.
- The service now offers up to 23,000 grocery and liquor products, alongside 10,000 general merchandise items, with an extension to a web-app platform.
- Shoprite's Xtra Savings Plus subscription service and loyalty programs have seen growth, despite increasing competition from Pick n Pay, Woolworths, Spar, and others.

- Both banks are leveraging strategic retail alliances to drive customer engagement and retention in the highly competitive banking rewards space.

Has Fourways Mall turned the corner?
- Fourways Mall is displaying improvement signs regarding a decrease in the number of vacancies from 19.2% in March to 17.9% in September, and leases have been renewed for 32,939m² of its 178,000m² lettable area.
- Renewals include a quarter of higher rentals, three quarters were set at lower values, and the remainder was left flat.
- Experienced managing agents -Flanagan and Gerard and the Moolman Group- were brought in to fill in empty spaces, with each owner individually investing R200m to add capital expenditure projects.
- Compliance capital expenditure has been the primary focus at the mall, while obvious issues like chipped tiles have been replaced, the creation of exterior back-up power and better parking signage has been enforced.
- According to reports, leases have been signed by a significant number of tenants, including Chinese retailer Value Co, Checkers, Converse, Carrol Boyes, and Uniq Clothing.
- In 2022, the mall is installing wellness and exercise offerings by revealing the debut of the new Planet Fitness gym and eight padel courts to attract weekday visitors.
- Although the mall is reportedly feeling busier and fuller than years past during festive periods, recent policies are likely to do little to counter the issue of the mall being 25% too large.
- Several intermediate improvements have been made, while the present process is expected to proceed for several years.
- The mall has initiated a business improvement district in the node, which is intended to counteract Johannesburg's failing infrastructure.
- The appointment of experienced operators and creative implementation procedures have helped turn Fourways Mall towards a more stable position.

Summers’s bold plan for Pick n Pay starts to deliver
- Pick N Pay’s turnaround plan announced in May 2024 by its CEO Sean Summers to turn around the core business is starting to deliver results.
- Efforts have been made towards fixing the in-store customer experience and addressing problems across its store estate.
- The five-year plan will see as many as 100 corporate supermarkets either being shut or converted to franchises or Boxer outlets, based on profitability considerations.
- However, it’s a fluid plan and could yield results sooner than anticipated as marginal stores may be turned profitable.
- Between February 2024 and January 2025, Pick n Pay has shut a total of 32 stores (net), with 24 of these being company-owned stores.
- It is “encouraged by the much-improved like-for-like volume trend over the past 12 months, as like-for-like sales growth has steadily risen against falling inflation”.
- The franchise division continues to drag on overall performance but turned positive in the second half.
- In the next financial year (from March 2025 onwards), it is targeting to break-even on the operating cash burn metric, after capex and restructuring costs.
- In FY27 (from March 2026), the company aims to break even in terms of trading profit (from a R2.6 billion loss in FY24).
- Sean Summers, CEO of Pick n Pay has been granted a share incentive of four million shares in the group of over R110 million and has taken a very modest salary.
