- Here's an overview of the role and responsibilities of a junior cardiac surgeon:Surgical Procedures: A junior cardiac surgeon assists in performing a variety of cardiac surgeries, including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair or replacement, congenital heart defect repairs, heart transplant, and implantation of medical devices like pacemakers
- Preoperative Evaluation: Junior cardiac surgeons are involved in the preoperative evaluation of patients
- They review medical records, conduct physical examinations, and order diagnostic tests to assess the patient's condition and determine the most appropriate surgical approach
- Operating Room Assistance: During surgeries, a junior cardiac surgeon assists the senior surgeon by performing tasks such as suturing, tissue handling, controlling bleeding, and ensuring the surgical instruments and equipment are ready and functional
- Postoperative Care: After surgeries, junior cardiac surgeons monitor patients' progress in the intensive care unit (ICU) or cardiac care unit (CCU)
- They manage postoperative complications, prescribe medications, and oversee the patient's recovery process
- Collaborative Care: Junior cardiac surgeons work closely with other members of the cardiac surgery team, including anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals
