Engineer II-Cloud

What youll be doing...

The work you'll be doing as a developer for Verizon's Cloud Infrastructure supporting development of deployment automation pipelines and other tooling for the infrastructure. You will be supporting a highly reliable infrastructure running critical network functions. You will be responsible for solving issues that are new and unique, which will provide the opportunity to innovate. This position involves the development of software for Verizons Service Provisioning Platforms. You will have autonomous control over day-to-day activities allocated to the team as part of agile development of new services.

• Interfacing with the engineering and operations team to develop a collaborative process for handoff ensuring supportability and on time delivery.
• Building DevOps tools for CI/CD based deployment of cloud infrastructure.

Cloud Platform Development:

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable, reliable cloud platforms on AWS, ensuring they support our application needs while maintaining high availability and performance.

Automation & Infrastructure as Code (IaC):

• Automate cloud infrastructure management and deployments using tools like Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, and Ansible. Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to maintain consistent and repeatable cloud environments.

Monitoring & Alerting:

• Leverage monitoring tools such as AWS CloudWatch, Splunk, Zabbix, and Grafana to monitor system health, detect issues, and proactively resolve them. Design and configure alerts to ensure timely responses to critical events.

CI/CD Pipeline Management (Jenkins):

• Work with the development and DevOps teams to design, implement, and optimize CI/CD pipelines using Jenkins for efficient, automated deployment of applications and infrastructure.

Security & Compliance:

• Implement security best practices for AWS services and ensure adherence to security protocols. Configure IAM roles, VPC security, encryption, and compliance policies.

Performance & Cost Optimization:

• Continuously optimize cloud infrastructure for performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. Use AWS native tools and third-party solutions to analyze usage patterns and recommend cost-saving strategies.

Incident Response & Troubleshooting:

• Use Splunk, AWS CloudWatch, and other monitoring tools to troubleshoot production issues. Take ownership of critical incidents and guide teams through resolution, ensuring minimal downtime.

Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing:

• Work closely with the development, operations, and DevOps teams to design and implement cloud-based solutions. Provide mentorship and support to team members while sharing best practices for cloud engineering.

Documentation & Reporting:

• Maintain detailed documentation of cloud architecture, platform configurations, and incident reports. Regularly provide status reports, performance metrics, and cost analysis to leadership.

What were looking for...

• Bachelors degree or one or more years of work experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS services including EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, VPC, CloudFormation, and CloudWatch.
• Experience with scaling, securing, and optimizing AWS infrastructure.
• Expertise in using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or other IaC tools to provision and manage infrastructure.
• Experience with monitoring tools such as Splunk, Zabbix, Grafana, and AWS CloudWatch.
• Ability to configure, maintain, and use these tools to identify performance bottlenecks and security issues.
• Experience with Jenkins or similar CI/CD tools, including setting up automated build, test, and deployment pipelines for cloud-based applications.
• Knowledge of cloud security best practices, including IAM roles, VPC design, encryption, and compliance.
• Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Bash) to automate cloud infrastructure management and workflows.

Even better if you have one or more of the following:

• AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, etc.)
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and effectively explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
• Familiarity with serverless architectures and AWS Lambda.
• Knowledge of cost optimization strategies in AWS, including Reserved Instances, Auto Scaling, and Spot Instances.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with experience identifying and resolving cloud infrastructure-related issues.
• Familiarity with AWS security tools (e.g., GuardDuty, Inspector, KMS).
• Ability to work under pressure to resolve production incidents.
