Role and Responsibilities

A. Technology / Bioprocess Development

Develop new technologies and products using fermentation technology (submerged/solid state), microbiological, and enzymatic processes, carryout fermenter process optimization and troubleshooting.

Isolation and identification of microbial cultures, strain development (overexpression/gene modification), and optimization of fermentation processes and parameters using mathematical modelling.

Perform protein purification using chromatography techniques and conduct enzyme assays to assess activity, specificity, and kinetics. Utilize mass spectrometry (MS) for identification and quantification and apply spectroscopic methods (UV-Vis, fluorescence) for protein analysis.

Prepare and maintain protein/enzyme stocks and establish protocols for extraction and purification.

Execute electrophoretic techniques like SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, with an advantage in bioinformatics tools.

Experience with lab-scale and pilot-plant fermenters, centrifugation, filtration techniques (micro, ultra, and nano filtration), various chromatography methods (ion exchange and size exclusion), evaporation, and spray drying.

Prepare Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Standard Test Procedures (STPs) to comply with the process. Actively troubleshoot to minimize risks before and during execution.

Utilize Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis.

Generate, compile, review, and analyse data to formulate upstream/downstream process development strategies and make improvement recommendations.

Independently design and execute molecular biology experiments, including gene identification, cloning, and overexpression.

Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and SAP is a plus.

B. People and Process Development

Collaborate with colleagues from other verticals such as business, production, QA, QC, and operations.

Work closely with the fermentation division for process scale-up.

Accountability:

Successful development, scale-up, and downstream processing of new products.

Delivery of innovative technologies to the business.

Achieving process improvements to enhance cost efficiency and product throughput.

Optimal allocation of resources across projects.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

Number of technologies/products developed at lab and pilot scale.

Number of downstream processes developed for product purification.

Education & Experience Requirements:

M.Sc. in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, or M.Tech in Bioprocess Engineering/Biotechnology from a reputed institute.

10-15 years of experience in strain development, fermentation (bacterial, yeast, fungal), downstream processing, enzyme overexpression and product purification in areas such as prebiotics, probiotics, and enzymes.

Proven track record of scientific excellence in developing new technologies, conducting studies in Nutrition & Biosciences, and rich in publications/patents.
