- Takes the nursing history, summarizes data, and states nursing diagnoses/ patient care needs.
- Executes physician's orders for all assigned patients; safely and properly administers medications and treatments.
- To be responsible for collection of specimens if any when ordered, ensuring correct labeling.
- To be responsible for preparing assigned patients for programmed medical procedures.
- To participate in specialist's rounds and assist by giving relevant information as regards to nursing observations.
- To supervise the cleanliness of assigned area or the department.
- To carry out routine check at each handover that all equipment's are in working order.
- To ensure that all items used for residents inclusive of medications, surgical supplies are duly recorded and charged.
- Maintain residents' safety by taking preventive measures against accidents.
- Accurately records and reports incidents.
Special Responsibilities
- Primes dialyzer.
- Records patients' medical information and vital signs.
- Keep prepared dialysis equipment.
- Oversee the dialysis treatment from start to finish.
- Cannulates accesses.
- Demonstrates the ability to remove femoral sheaths & administer medications, including thrombolytics.
- Cleans and dresses permanent and temporary catheters.
- Monitors patient and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, and interprets and records information.
- Identifies irregular dialysis reactions and notifies appropriate medical team members.
- Provides pre- and post-procedure care to patients within the Hemodialysis Unit.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Assist preparation of the delivery system, dialysate bath, and dialyzer and confirms that all mandatory alarm tests on the dialyzer and equipment are performed.
- Reviews physician orders for dialysis patients, collects pre-treatment dialysis data, and reviews patient records prior to dialysis.
- Conducts pre-dialysis patient assessment including obtaining patient vital signs and assessing the patient's vascular access, laboratory findings, and the patient's general health.
- Verifies that patients are taking all prescribed medications and performs medication reconciliation.
- Documents findings of patient assessments and interventions and advises providers of any significant change in the patient's condition and other pertinent information.
- Discusses patient concerns and answers questions relevant to care.
- Assist dialysis technicians in the performance of dialysis from start to finish, monitors patient reaction to treatment and performance of the dialysis machines, and demonstrates an in-depth understanding of the mechanics of dialysis.
- Assesses, prepares, and cannulates a patient's vascular access (including needle insertion in arteriovenous fistula or grafts for aseptic connection with dialysis equipment).
- Utilizes sterile techniques to assess the dialysis catheter exit site and to apply dressing on the patient's vascular access (dialysis catheter, arteriovenous access) per protocols.
- Maintains skills necessary to perform surveillance on dialysis access (catheter, fistula, graft) for early signs of failure or infection; this includes (if needed and after receiving the appropriate training) the ability to perform arteriovenous access monitoring using ultrasound machine per protocol.
- Reviews patient's electronic/paper records for orders as appropriate and administers dialysis-related intravenous and/or oral medications as prescribed and/or per protocol.
- Conducts post dialysis assessment and patient discharge by evaluating treatment, documenting medication administration utilizing the appropriate protocols, assessing condition of vascular access, discharging the patient when vital signs are stable, and documenting and recording patient treatment data.
- Provides patient education/teaching applicable to the patient's medical condition.
- Refers patient to other disciplines or services as needed (nutrition, social work, etc).
- Perform other treatments and diagnostic tests such as blood sugar testing and other tests required as part of patient treatment.
- Assist to disassemble and disinfection of dialysis equipment.
- Maintains skills necessary to do regional heparinization, separate and store blood samples, set up oxygen, administer saline, and maintain dialysis equipment.
- Assist surveillance and testing of dialysis water treatment equipment and dialysis water (such as chlorine, hardness, conductivity, water cultures) to ensure that these machines are operating within the parameters set in the facility's written protocols.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of dialysis laboratory tests and dialysis medications.
- Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of infection control and prevention of transmission of blood borne pathogens.
- Participate in quality improvement activities to include collection of data for the dialysis unit Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) plan.
- Respond appropriately and provides assistance in emergency situations.
- Assist in improving patient care, maintaining standards of care, directing and teaching personnel.
- Work closely with others in the dialysis team and participate in interdisciplinary team meetings.
- Maintain responsibility for providing coverage to the dialysis department.
Required Candidate Profile
- Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery / Bachelor of Science - Nursing.
- Current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse in Karnataka State [should possess valid Karnataka Nursing Council Number]
- Demonstrated ability to practice in accordance with legislation, policies and procedures affecting Registered Nursing practice.
- Demonstrated ability to accept accountability and responsibility for own actions within Registered Nurses scope of practice and works within the CAH Framework Competency Standards for a Registered Nurse.
- Evidence of participation in own professional development and commitment to maintaining competence and enhancement of skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of evidence-based best practice and its contribution to changing practice and policies within the organization.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
- Ensures that the quality of care provided to patients is safe, efficient, effective, accessible, and timely and consumer focused.
- Demonstrates competence, confidence and accountability in the safe delivery of patient care.
- Minimum 1 year of experience as Dialysis Staff Nurse in NABH recognized Hospital.
- Knowledge of emergency hospital procedures, critical care unit infection control and hygiene policies.
- Hands-on experience in caring for surgical patients.
- Proven ability to multitask and work calmly but efficiently in sensitive environment.

- Compassion: Nurses help people. You will need to be sympathetic to a patient's needs, and be able to deal with people in various states of pain, trauma and tragedy.
- Attention to Detail: Nurses can help doctors operate, administer medicines and work with specific treatments that, if wrong could prove fatal.
- Attention to detail is crucial.
- Organizational Skills: Nurses will face multiple patients, with differing needs, stages of health and risks. Being organized and knowing how to prioritize will be helpful.
- Focused under Pressure: Nurses might face emergency, life-or-death situations. Being able to function in the heat of emergency will be necessary.
- Patience: Giving care under stressful circumstances requires patience.
- Communication Skills: Nurses might communicate directly with patients who are scared, in pain or in shock. Families will have questions and want answers. Nurses need to be a patient listener and good communicator to help keep everyone calm and help them understand the situation.

The salary is too low for a senior staff, even though the fresher are getting near 30k and 13yrsexperienced nurse only getting 37k..its too bad 😞
