- A Senior Operations Manager (Logistics - FTL) is responsible for overseeing and managing the operations related to Full Truckload (FTL) freight transportation.
- FTL refers to the shipping of large freight that occupies an entire truck or trailer, typically for long-distance deliveries.
- The Senior Operations Manager ensures that the logistics and transportation processes are efficient, cost-effective, and meet customer demands.
Here's an overview of the key responsibilities, skills, and qualifications typically required for this role:
Key Responsibilities:
1. Operational Oversight: o Manage daily operations of the FTL logistics network, ensuring the movement of goods is seamless and timely.
- Coordinate with internal teams (e.g., supply chain, procurement, customer service) and external partners (e.g., carriers, warehouses) to ensure optimal service delivery.
- Responsible for all the operational requirements as per the management needs and customer engagement
2. Fleet Management: o Oversee the management and maintenance of a fleet of trucks or coordinate with third-party carriers.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, safety standards, and environmental considerations.
- Monitor fleet performance and cost-efficiency.
Route Planning & Optimization:
- Develop and implement efficient routing strategies to minimize transportation costs while ensuring timely delivery.
- Leverage technology and software to optimize routes, monitor traffic, and avoid delays.
Budgeting and Cost Control:
- Manage operational budgets, track expenditures, and identify areas for cost reduction.
- Analyze transportation data to identify inefficiencies and implement cost-saving initiatives without compromising service quality.
Vendor and Carrier Management:
- Build and maintain relationships with third-party carriers, ensuring reliable and cost-effective services.
- Negotiate contracts and service level agreements (SLAs) with carriers and logistics service providers.
Team Leadership:
- Lead and mentor a team of logistics coordinators, dispatchers, and other operations staff.
- Provide training and development opportunities for staff to improve performance and knowledge.
- Conduct performance evaluations and implement best practices to enhance team productivity.
Customer Relationship Management:
- Ensure that customer delivery requirements are met with high levels of service.
- Communicate proactively with customers about order status, potential delays, or issues that arise during transportation.
Data Analysis & Reporting:
- Use data analytics to monitor and improve the performance of the logistics network.
- Prepare reports and presentations for senior management, highlighting key performance indicators (KPIs) such as on-time delivery, fleet utilization, and cost metrics.
Project management:

- Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and best practices to continuously improve the logistics operation.
- Drive process improvements and technological adoption to enhance operational efficiency and service quality.
Key Skills & Qualifications :
- Experience in Logistics & Transportation: Extensive experience in managing FTL or similar logistics operations, ideally in senior or leadership roles.
- Leadership & Team Management: Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams, foster collaboration, and drive results.
- Analytical Skills: Strong ability to analyse data, assess operational performance, and implement improvements.
- Budgeting & Financial Acumen: Experience managing budgets, analysing cost structures, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- Problem Solving: Ability to handle complex logistical challenges, resolve conflicts, and adapt to changing circumstances.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, particularly in managing relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Technology Proficiency: Familiarity with transportation management software (TMS), GPS tracking systems, and analytics tools.
Proficiency in excel - Regulatory Knowledge: In-depth understanding of transportation laws, safety regulations, and industry standards.
- Degree Requirements: A bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, business administration, or a related field is typically required.
- A master's degree is a plus.
