Engineer - Backend (Java)

Meet our team
The Payments Risk Engineering team is responsible for fraud detection and risk management. We design, develop, enhance, and support services that are called across every money movement transaction between PayPal and its users and partners. Our solutions need to scale across millions of such interactions, integrating with various other APIs in real time while providing high availability and configurability to the business. We strive to keep up with advances in technology and science and tie those back to business needs.

• Design and develop scalable backend systems.

• Optimize system performance and reliability.

• Mentor junior engineers.

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field.

• 3-5 years of backend development experience.

• Proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Python, Ruby on Rails)

• Advanced proficiency in backend development with either Java EE frameworks, including experience with Spring MVC, or Hibernate.

• Experience designing and implementing RESTful services, focusing on scalability and reliability, using Java.

• Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to code reviews and design discussions.

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)

• Experience with databases (SQL, NoSQL)

• Strong understanding of database design, including SQL and NoSQL databases, and experience with ORM tools.

• Experience with large-scale, high-performance systems.

• Knowledge of the payment processing industry and relevant regulations.

• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).

• Contributions to open-source projects.
