Language Commissioner

Purpose of the Role

The Language Commissioner will oversee language data support services related to the creation, editing, maintenance, and development of Indian language lexical content for Oxford Languages licensing activities. This role ensures alignment with business requirements and product needs, contributing to high-quality content development, adhering to best practices, meeting agreed timelines, and optimizing resources and technology to support Oxford Languages' dictionary strategy.

Roles and Responsibilities

Content Creation and Development

• Manage editorial support services for the creation and development of new and existing lexical content.
• Ensure content consistently meets publishing and licensing requirements with minimal further work needed.

Language Data Support Services Training and Development

• Implement ongoing training programs with support from product and editorial teams.
• Ensure freelance and contractual staff develop the necessary skills and competence for consistency, quality, and output.

Language Data Support Services Planning

• Support Customer Success, Product, Delivery teams, and other stakeholders.
• Develop, scope, and plan editorial support services to create new content and enhance existing content for publishing and licensing.
• Optimize the use of internal and external resources and technical efficiency to meet quality, schedule, and budget requirements.

Strategy

• Contribute to strategic thinking on language data support services for content development.
• Optimize content for all Oxford Languages publishing and licensing purposes.

Continuous Improvement

• Identify continuous improvement opportunities.
• Work with colleagues to implement new processes, workflows, systems, and lessons learned effectively.

Communication and Cross-Functional Working

• Collaborate with product, technology, licensing, local editorial teams, and other stakeholders.
• Ensure editorial services plans are informed by revenue and resource considerations, user experience, best practices, and industry trends.

Preferred Candidate Profile

Experience

• Degree-level experience or proven competency in another language.
• In-depth knowledge of language data with proven experience.
• Practical editorial and editorial support services experience.
• Experience working with content and data in languages other than English.
• Experience working with third parties, including vendors and freelancers.
• Experience working in an international team and across various team functions.

Desirable

• High level of competence in at least one additional language.
• Dictionary or languages editorial services experience.
• Awareness of and skills in data handling and manipulation, including knowledge of structured databases.
