Safety Officer

Job Title: Safety Officer Mines

Location: Barbil Office

Reports To: Safety Manager / Mine Manager

Job Summary:

The Safety Officer in the mining industry ensures compliance with occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations and promotes a safe working environment for all employees. They are responsible for implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring the mine operates in adherence to legal and company safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Safety Compliance:
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and mining laws.
• Monitor adherence to company safety policies and procedures.
2. Risk Assessment & Hazard Identification:
• Conduct regular risk assessments and hazard identification processes.
• Recommend control measures to mitigate risks.
3. Training & Awareness:
• Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees and contractors.
• Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings regularly.
4. Incident Management:
• Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses.
• Prepare detailed reports and recommend corrective and preventive measures.
5. Safety Inspections & Audits:
• Perform routine safety inspections of mine sites, equipment, and facilities.
• Ensure proper functioning of safety equipment, such as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
6. Emergency Preparedness:
• Develop and implement emergency response plans.
• Conduct drills and training to ensure readiness for emergencies.
7. Documentation & Reporting:
• Maintain accurate records of safety audits, incidents, training, and compliance activities.
• Submit periodic reports to management and regulatory authorities.
8. Stakeholder Coordination:
• Collaborate with supervisors, workers, and regulatory agencies to promote a culture of safety.
• Provide guidance on safety requirements for contractors and vendors.
9. Continuous Improvement:
• Stay updated on industry best practices and new safety regulations.
• Recommend improvements to enhance overall safety performance.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Educational Requirements:
• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Industrial health and safety, Environmental Science, Mining Engineering, or a related field.
• Relevant safety certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, OSHA, ISO 45001) are highly desirable.
• Experience:
• Minimum 3-5 years of experience in a similar role, preferably in the mining industry.

• Strong knowledge of mining safety laws and regulations.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
• Proficiency in safety management systems and reporting tools.
• Ability to work in challenging environments and under pressure.

Working Conditions:

• Work is performed in both office and field environments.
• Exposure to loud noises, dust, heavy machinery, and varying weather conditions.
• Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
