1. Job Details

• Job Title: Lab Assistant
• Location: Kothrud, Pune
• Reporting To: Head of School (HOS)

2. Job Purpose

The Lab Assistant is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization in the laboratory, ensuring the availability of necessary materials, and assisting students during practical sessions.

3. Key Responsibilities

Lab Setup and Maintenance

• Improve lab setup and ensure proper maintenance.
• Submit requests for chemicals, glassware, and lab equipment as needed for practicals.
• Collect and manage lab supplies from the store.
• Ensure the functionality of lab instruments and equipment.
• Prepare reagents and perform demonstration experiments to standardize procedures.
• Maintain utilities such as LPG, water, and electricity.
• Assist faculty in conducting practical examinations.

Student Assistance and Supervision

• Ensure students arrive on time and follow the required lab arrangements.
• Verify that students bring the necessary materials for experiments.
• Issue chemicals, glassware, and equipment to students.
• Assist students in setting up and handling instruments and equipment.
• Provide guidance for student research projects.
• Monitor students to ensure they follow standard procedures.
• Record and manage breakage incidents.

Laboratory Maintenance

• Properly store and organize lab supplies and equipment.
• Maintain inventory of chemicals, glassware, and labware.
• Perform routine maintenance of instruments and equipment, including logbooks and service records.
• Calibrate instruments and ensure timely servicing.
• Display Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for equipment usage.
• Maintain adequate LPG, water, and electricity supply.
• Receive training for equipment maintenance.
• Ensure correct labeling of chemical containers.

Laboratory Documentation

• Maintain records for stock, issuance, and breakages of lab materials.
• Keep track of dead stock for instruments and equipment.
• Document cleaning schedules and maintenance activities.
• Log instrument/equipment breakdowns, servicing, and movement.
• Organize SOP files and instrument logbooks.
• Maintain indent records for chemicals and equipment requests.
• Verify available stock and manage related documentation.
• Keep safety audit records up to date.
• Handle other lab-related documentation as needed.

Lab Safety Compliance

• Ensure proper functioning of gas pipelines, fire extinguishers, fume cupboards, and utilities.
• Supervise safe handling of hazardous or volatile chemicals.
• Monitor proper storage and limited stock of hazardous and flammable chemicals.
• Educate students on the safe use of chemicals and equipment.

Additional Responsibilities

• Assist with administrative tasks related to programs, events, admissions, student activities, and regulatory inspections.
• Serve as an invigilator during theory examinations.

Departmental Library Support

• Maintain records for book issuance, stock, and utilization.
• Handle other documentation tasks as assigned by higher authorities.
