Design Manager

Position: Head Engineering and Development
Department: Engineering and Development (Sheet Metal)
Reporting To: Management

Role Overview

As an Head Engineering and Development, you will oversee and contribute to the end-to-end development of projects, ensuring technical accuracy, timely execution, and customer satisfaction. You will act as a pivotal link between design, production, quality, and customers, ensuring the seamless execution of project goals. The role demands expertise in technical design, project planning, process optimization, and effective communication with stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

Project Assignment and Enquiry Management

• Receive project assignments and drawings from the team leader.
• Update the enquiry register upon receipt of new drawings.
• Conduct a comprehensive drawing study and prepare feasibility reports.

Internal and External Technical Discussions

• Engage in technical discussions with the team leader regarding tools (punch, die) and outsourcing requirements.
• Finalize project timelines using Gantt charts and communicate targets effectively.
• Participate in technical discussions with customers to finalize project requirements and address deviations.

Design and Process Development

• Prepare detailed process sheets and Bills of Material (BOM) and submit them to the Planning and Purchase departments.
• Create items, item groups, and BOM entries in the ERP system.
• Design models, assemblies, and detailed components, addressing any defects or deviations with customer approval.
• Develop production charts, DXFs, DXF lists, and bending drawings as required.

Change Management and Documentation

• Prepare and process Engineering Change Notes (ECN) or Memos for management approval and distribute to relevant departments.
• Update document control lists, DXF issue control lists, master revision controls, and order review checklists.

Quality and Risk Management

• Conduct PFMEA (Process Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) and Process Control Studies for critical components during manufacturing.
• Address and resolve customer complaints efficiently.
• Collaborate with the Quality Control (QC) team on critical component inspections and drawing clarifications.

Process and Fixture Development

• Once development components are approved for production, prepare Process Flow Charts (PFC), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), and fixture models.
• Discuss fixture concepts with the customers Product Engineering (PE) team, obtain approvals, and initiate fixture manufacturing.
• Educate welders on SOPs for manufacturing components.

Production Support

• Support the production team with fixture improvements and provide welding templates as needed.
• Monitor manufacturing processes, ensuring adherence to design specifications and customer requirements.

Customer Interaction and Support

• Address customer complaints, resolve issues, and ensure satisfactory outcomes.
• Regularly engage with customers to provide updates and resolve technical queries.

KPIs for Success

• Project Management: Timely and accurate delivery of process sheets, BOMs, and production charts.
• Technical Expertise: Quality of feasibility reports, designs, and adherence to specifications.
• Customer Satisfaction: Positive feedback and reduced complaint resolution times.
• Process Efficiency: Effective utilization of PFMEA and process control studies to mitigate risks.
• Collaboration: Seamless communication with internal teams and customers, leading to efficient project execution.

Qualifications and Skills Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical/Production Engineering or equivalent.
• Proficiency in design and modeling software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar).
• Strong knowledge of ERP systems and engineering documentation standards.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration with teams and customers.
• Experience in PFMEA, process control studies, and quality management is desirable.
