Consultant Pediatric General Surgery

Roles and Responsibilities

1. Patient Care and Diagnosis

• Perform detailed evaluations of pediatric patients, considering their unique anatomical and physiological needs.
• Diagnose congenital and acquired conditions such as hernias, appendicitis, pyloric stenosis, and congenital malformations.
• Utilize diagnostic tools like imaging (X-rays, ultrasound, CT/MRI scans) and laboratory tests to confirm conditions.

2. Surgical Procedures

• Conduct both routine and complex surgeries tailored for children, including:
• Neonatal surgeries (e.g., repair of congenital abnormalities like diaphragmatic hernias or bowel obstructions).
• Abdominal surgeries (e.g., appendectomy, intestinal resections).
• Thoracic surgeries (e.g., lung resections, chest wall deformities).
• Minimally invasive surgeries (e.g., laparoscopic or robotic procedures).
• Trauma surgeries (e.g., repairing injuries caused by accidents).

3. Pre- and Post-operative Care

• Develop and discuss treatment plans with the childs family.
• Prepare patients for surgery, ensuring they meet medical requirements and explaining procedures to parents and caregivers.
• Monitor recovery post-surgery, manage complications, and ensure proper wound care.

4. Collaboration and Multidisciplinary Approach

• Work closely with pediatricians, neonatologists, anesthesiologists, and other specialists to ensure comprehensive care.
• Collaborate with social workers and child life specialists to address the emotional needs of patients and families.

5. Emergency Care

• Handle urgent and emergency cases, such as trauma, intestinal perforations, or foreign body ingestion.
• Be on call for critical situations requiring immediate surgical intervention.

6. Education and Counseling

• Educate parents and caregivers about the child’s condition, surgical procedure, risks, and prognosis.
• Provide ongoing support to families during the recovery process.

7. Research and Education

• Participate in or lead research to advance pediatric surgical techniques and treatments.
• Train medical students, residents, and fellows in pediatric surgery.

8. Advocacy for Pediatric Health

• Advocate for child-specific healthcare needs in medical practices and policy-making.
• Promote preventive care and early diagnosis of surgical conditions in children.
