Machine Design Engineer

The Machine Design Engineer will be responsible for designing and developing process equipment, including pressure vessels, reactors, and other custom machinery used in industrial applications. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, a strong background in process equipment design, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams to create cost-effective, efficient, and safe designs. This role will involve detailed design work, stress analysis, materials selection, and ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards.

Role & responsibilities

Design & Development:

• Design process equipment such as pressure vessels, tanks, reactors, heat exchangers, mixers, and other custom machinery, ensuring designs meet both technical requirements and safety standards.
• Perform detailed 3D CAD modeling and drafting using tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or Inventor to create precise equipment drawings and specifications.
• Develop process flow diagrams, P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), and other technical documents to support equipment design.
• Conduct detailed stress, thermal, and fluid flow analysis to ensure the integrity and performance of designed equipment, using simulation software and engineering principles.
• Select materials (e.g., metals, composites, polymers) based on application requirements, including corrosion resistance, strength, temperature tolerance, and manufacturability.

Standards & Compliance:

• Ensure designs comply with industry standards and regulatory requirements, such as ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), AS1210, PED (Pressure Equipment Directive), and other relevant local or international codes.
• Review and apply safety standards in design to prevent failures, leaks, and other potential hazards in process equipment and vessels.
• Prepare and review calculations and documentation for regulatory approvals and client specifications, ensuring equipment is safe, efficient, and compliant with applicable regulations.

Collaboration & Communication:

• Work closely with cross-functional teams, including process engineers, project managers, procurement teams, and manufacturing personnel, to ensure that designs are manufacturable and align with project timelines and budgets.
• Provide technical support to the sales team, offering expertise in customer inquiries related to process equipment and machinery specifications.
• Assist in the preparation of bids and proposals by providing technical content and collaborating with the sales team to ensure the proposed equipment meets customer requirements.
• Participate in project meetings to discuss design progress, resolve technical challenges, and ensure timely delivery of projects.

Testing & Validation:

• Support the testing and validation of new designs, including overseeing prototype fabrication, commissioning, and performance testing.
• Troubleshoot design or operational issues that arise during the manufacturing or installation phases, offering solutions to mitigate delays or technical failures.

Continuous Improvement:

• Identify opportunities for design optimization, cost reductions, and process improvements to enhance the performance and reliability of process equipment.
• Stay current with the latest technological advancements in machine design, materials, and manufacturing processes to implement best practices and innovations in design.

Preferred candidate profile

Education:

Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. A Masters degree in a relevant discipline is a plus.

Experience:

• 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, with a strong focus on process equipment, vessels, or similar machinery.
• Proven experience designing and developing pressure vessels, heat exchangers, reactors, and other complex process systems.
• Experience with industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, PED, AS1210) and knowledge of material selection for process applications.
• Hands-on experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar) and engineering simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, FEA for stress analysis).
• Familiarity with manufacturing processes, including welding, casting, and machining, and the ability to design for manufacturability.
