Lead Electrical Design Engineer

Role Overview:

An Electrical Design Engineer specializing in Substation Engineering within the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) domain ensures the efficient design, development, and execution of substation projects, with a focus on quality, compliance, and timely delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

Tender Preparation & Evaluation:

• Prepare tender specifications, technical data sheets, material requisites (MRs), and Design Basis Reports (DBRs).
• Conduct Technical Bid Evaluations (TBE) to assess vendor compliance and compatibility.
• Electrical Design & Documentation:
• Develop and review Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) for overall system and basic protection schemes.
• Prepare schematic diagrams, schedules, I/O lists, and logical configurations for EHV, MV, and LV systems
• Substation Engineering:
• Perform detailed calculations, including conductor sizing, sag tension analysis, protection philosophy, and short circuit force evaluations for voltage levels up to 220kV AIS/GIS.
• Design layouts for substation equipment and ensure compliance with applicable standards.
• Equipment Sizing & Calculations:
• Size electrical equipment such as CTs, PTs, transformers, DC systems, UPS systems, auxiliary systems, switchgears, and MCCs.
• Conduct calculations for cables, cable tray/conduit sizing, cable tray loading, earthing, and lighting systems.
• System Studies & Analysis:
• Perform system studies, including load flow analysis, short circuit calculations, and motor starting studies using ETAP and manual methods.
• Layout & Drawing Review:
• Review substation general arrangements, erection key diagrams, earth mat designs, raceways, grounding plans, and equipment layouts.
• Oversee preparation of cable distribution board schedules and inter-panel wiring diagrams.
• Quality Control & Coordination:
• Ensure technical documents, drawings, and specifications align with project scope and quality standards.
• Administer design changes and collaborate with internal departments to maintain operational synergy.
• Team Development & Knowledge Sharing:
• Conduct kick-off, progress, and technical meetings to align team efforts.
• Manage a Lessons Learned database to implement improvements in future projects.
• Stakeholder Collaboration:
• Work with clients, vendors, and internal teams to finalize technical requirements and ensure seamless integration during execution.
• Project Support:
• Provide engineering support during installation, commissioning, and testing phases.
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues to maintain timelines and standards.

Essential Skills:

Technical Expertise:

• Proficient in ETAP for system studies and AutoCAD/MicroStation for design.
• Skilled in protection relay configuration and SCADA/automation protocols (e.g., IEC 61850, Modbus).
• Analytical Abilities:
• Strong capability in performing complex electrical calculations and problem-solving.
• Project Management:
• Experience managing EPC workflows, including scheduling and resource allocation.
• Team Leadership:
• Adept at mentoring teams and driving collaboration across departments.

Qualifications:

Education:

• Bachelors or Masters degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields.
• Experience:
• 5 -10 years in substation design engineering with a focus on EPC projects and voltage levels up to 220kV AIS/GIS.
• Certifications (Preferred):
• Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
• Training in advanced power system studies or protection design.
