Staff Application Engineer

POSITION OVERVIEW

Application Engineers at FTC Solar are tasked with developing profound expertise in the design, construction, and application of the FTC Solar tracker product portfolio. This role necessitates strong problem-solving skills, exceptional organizational and program management capabilities, and the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. As an Application Engineer, you will collaborate with customers, suppliers, and various internal teams within FTC Solar to resolve field-related issues that may emerge during the construction, commissioning, or operation of the FTC Solar tracker. Your role is instrumental in driving continuous improvements across the solar tracker product portfolio, enhancing ease of installation, energy production, cost-effectiveness, and quality. Frequent travel to supplier locations and field construction sites is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and execute a roadmap for continuous improvement of the solar tracker portfolio.
• Tackle and resolve customer-related issues during construction, commissioning, or operation.
• Collaborate with the quality team to comprehend failure mechanisms and drive root cause analyses.
• Take responsibility for enhancing product design and manufacturing processes by collaborating with suppliers and cross-functional internal teams.
• Prepare and coordinate field communications in various forms, such as application notes, change orders, and work instructions.
• Maintain the 3D model and the 2D Drawing package for the Tracker system. Create sub-assembly level Bill of Materials (BOM), technical drawings, and coordinate engineering changes as needed.
• Process oriented design and development of the tracker system that considers the cost, reliability, ease of manufacturing, and ease of installation of the components.
• Contribute insights to improve design, process Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs), and installation manuals.
• Undertake additional tasks as assigned by your supervisor or department head.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering or a related field (Aerospace, Structural, Civil, Materials).
• At least two (2) years of experience in mechanical design and product development.
• Proficiency in design tools of SolidWorks and ePDM.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
• Proficiency in business systems of Arena PLM, SmartSheets and agile program management methodologies.
• Demonstrated expertise in designing mechanical components, including assembly, analysis, and performance simulations (FEA) with proficiency in tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Strong interpersonal, influencing, and leadership skills.
• Preferred experience working in a multinational company in different time zones.
• Proven problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Preferred work locations in Chennai, India.
• Up to 20% travel required to FTC Solar suppliers, partners, offices, and sites across the U.S. and globally.
• Travel when required to Engineering Research Centre, Test facilities & Customer sites.
