Polysomnography (PSG) Technician

Job Summary:

The Polysomnography (PSG) Technician is responsible for performing and assisting with diagnostic sleep studies, including the application, operation, and monitoring of polysomnographic equipment. The technician ensures accurate data collection, patient safety, and comfort during sleep studies. This role requires technical proficiency in performing sleep tests and a strong understanding of the physiological processes associated with sleep disorders.

Key Responsibilities:

• Polysomnographic Test Setup:
• Set up and prepare the polysomnography equipment to monitor sleep patterns, brain activity (EEG), muscle activity (EMG), eye movements (EOG), heart rate (ECG), oxygen saturation, and respiratory function.
• Apply electrodes, sensors, and other necessary equipment to patients in accordance with testing protocols.
• Explain the procedure to patients and answer any questions to ensure their comfort and cooperation during the study.
• Patient Monitoring During Sleep Studies:
• Monitor patient data in real-time during sleep studies, ensuring accuracy of the recorded information.
• Adjust equipment settings and make necessary adjustments to improve data quality during the procedure.
• Address patient concerns or issues promptly, ensuring the safety and comfort of the patient throughout the test.
• Data Collection and Preliminary Analysis:
• Record and document detailed patient data, including sleep stages, respiratory events, and other physiological parameters.
• Provide a preliminary analysis of the data, noting any abnormalities or significant findings for review by the physician or sleep specialist.
• Assist in scoring sleep studies according to established guidelines, ensuring complete and accurate data is available for diagnosis.
• Equipment Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
• Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of polysomnography equipment to ensure it functions optimally.
• Report any malfunctions or issues with equipment to the supervisor and coordinate repairs or replacements.
• Patient Care and Safety:
• Monitor the patient throughout the study, ensuring that their needs are met and that they are comfortable and safe.
• Provide guidance and support to patients during their stay, explaining the next steps and answering questions as needed.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA regulations and privacy policies.
• Documentation and Record-Keeping:
• Maintain accurate, complete, and up-to-date patient records, including consent forms, sleep study results, and any notes related to the test.
• Ensure that patient data is properly entered into the electronic health record (EHR) system.
• Compliance and Standards:
• Follow all regulatory guidelines, institutional policies, and best practices in sleep study procedures.
• Adhere to infection control protocols, equipment sterilization, and patient safety measures.

Qualifications:

• Education:
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of a formal Polysomnography Technician training program is preferred.
• Experience:
• Previous experience working as a Polysomnography Technician or similar role is highly preferred.
• Familiarity with sleep disorders, respiratory physiology, and sleep study techniques is a plus.
• Certifications:
• Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification preferred or the ability to obtain within a specified time after hire.
• BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required (or to be obtained within the first 90 days).
• Skills:
• Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting polysomnographic equipment.
• Strong understanding of sleep disorders and physiological monitoring techniques.
• Excellent communication and patient interaction skills.
• Ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanour under pressure.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and reporting.
• Ability to work well in both independent and team settings.

Physical Demands:

• Ability to stand, sit, and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to lift up to 25 lbs of equipment and supplies.
• Manual dexterity to apply electrodes and manage equipment during testing.
• Occasional bending, stooping, and kneeling.

Work Environment:

• This position may require working night shifts, weekends, or flexible hours based on the scheduling of sleep studies.
