They assist in diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions related to the digestive system, such as Crohn's disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), liver disease, and cancers of the digestive tract. Key Responsibilities:

1. Patient Care:
   
• Conduct patient assessments, including physical exams, medical history, and reviewing symptoms related to GI issues.
• Administer medications and treatments, such as intravenous fluids, medications for GI conditions, or preparing patients for endoscopic procedures.
• Provide pre- and post-procedure care for diagnostic tests like colonoscopies, endoscopies, and other GI procedures.
• Monitor patients for adverse reactions during or after treatments or procedures.
• Manage and care for patients with GI-related complications, such as liver disease, reflux, and digestive tract disorders.
2. Patient Education:
   
• Educate patients about their diagnosis, treatment options, and proper diet and lifestyle changes to manage GI conditions.
• Offer support to patients undergoing long-term treatments, such as those with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or cirrhosis, and provide emotional support as needed.
• Teach patients and families how to use medical devices, such as feeding tubes, colostomy bags, or other supportive equipment.
3. Collaborative Work:
   
• Work closely with gastroenterologists, dietitians, surgeons, and other healthcare providers to create individualized care plans.
• Assist in performing endoscopic procedures by preparing equipment, monitoring patients during the procedure, and providing assistance to the physician.
• Participate in case discussions and offer insights into patient care based on observations and experiences.
4. Documentation and Administrative Duties:
   
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including medical histories, test results, and treatment plans.
• Monitor and document the effectiveness of treatments and interventions and make recommendations for modifications if necessary.
• Follow hospital policies, procedures, and safety guidelines for infection control and patient care.
5. Emotional and Psychological Support:
   
• Offer counseling and support to patients who may be anxious or fearful about procedures or long-term diagnoses.
• Assist in addressing concerns and questions related to a patient's condition and treatment plan.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Education: A nursing degree (Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)) is required, along with a valid state nursing license (RN).
• Experience: Previous experience in a clinical or hospital setting, especially in gastroenterology, is often preferred.
• Skills: Strong clinical skills, empathy, the ability to multitask, excellent communication skills, and knowledge of GI diseases and procedures.

Working Conditions:

• Gastroenterology Nurses typically work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and gastroenterology offices.
• They may work in shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on the setting.
