Motors convert electrical energy into mechanical energy, so they consume power and are rated in KW.
Transformers and generators produce electrical energy, so they are rated in KVA based on their apparent power.
KVA takes into account both the real power (KW) and the reactive power (KVAR) produced by the transformer or generator.
For example, a 100 KVA transformer may only produce 80 KW of real power due to losses in the system.
In contrast, a motor rated for 80 KW will consume 80 KW of real power to produce mechanical energy.

Transformers have copper losses and iron losses. Copper loss depends on current and iron loss depends on voltage. Neither depend on power factor. A kva is more useful in determining the % loss.
