First why we need clutch the simple answer is "As we know while changing a gear it is much important that every gear tooth should mesh with opposite gear tooth for perfect meshing we use clutch plate"

Now the answer is as we know there are 2 types of fialure that occure in case of gear 1. Bending 2. Wear which proves that one teeth applies bending force on other which ofcourse cause cracking, plastic deformation, fracture of teeth and clutch too.
