first of all, he has to be interested by himself, if he wants to learn, most old people dont mind smartphones.

android —the os on these phones— was strange for me, i didnt know how to do things but its a learning by doing with android, at least thats how it was with me and by now i got familiar with the use of android.

if he likes, he can try out things on the phone, no need to be scared to damage it, unless he drops it from a height to a hard ground or throws it against the wall or alike, the phones have a factory default to set it back to the factory deaults, if someone messes up the settings.

what i would show him on the phone first is the telephone feature, he can simply tip the telephone icon on the screen and then the telephone feature will open, then he can be shown that button that brings up the numeric pad to dial a telephone number and how to start the call after putting in the number, how to take calls and how to end calls, the actions are on a fingertip and will be strange to people who first use a smartphone but if he sees how its done, then he should know how to do likewise. if its interesting to him, he can then learn how to add new contacts, to dial numbers from the phones memory, without having to extra put in the numbers each time. if it isnt interesting to him, then he shouldnt be bothered with it.
