If you eat one slice of pizza the portion you ate is 1 out of 8 slices or 1/8 in mathematical form, and the remaining slices are 7, so we have 7 out of 8 slices or 7/8. Fractions are the portion out of the whole.

For example, you ate 3 slices of one box, so your portion out of the whole is 3/8 — portion or part over the number of portions in a whole.
