What is the thinking behind designing roads and cities?
Cities should be more about accessible places to be in rather than just places where people keep moving around and getting nowhere! The essence of the city is a coming together of people to perform meaningful activities. The city is an organism that processes raw material to convert it into something more meaningful and useful. Roads should serve the purpose and not be an end in itself. Los Angeles is said to have 60% of its space given to roads and yet there is not enough space for cars! Typically cities should have not more than 20% area given to various modes of transportation. Minimising the access routes and maximizing the accessed places should be an aim which many Indian cities are now sacrificing ever since the World Bank put infrastructure development in top gear through the JNNURM. Mindless flyovers, unnecessary Metro routes and large traffic termini are being seen as symbols of progress and modernization rather than taking the appropriate technology and common sense approach to traffic and transportation planning. Rationalising the resources available and making intelligent use of the available space needs to be on the agenda, not letting the traffic planner loose on urban spaces!
