Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: My Interview experience with Reliance BPO
Hi ,
This was the very first Interview experience of my life. I was doing my B-Tech at that time then I thought to join some BPO as a part time job and earn some money. So I registered with some consultants in Mohali then they sent me the interview details and on the day I reached with my resume and my document file.
The Experience was really good, as the lady (interviewer) seemed to be very much impressed from me and my qualifications and that too she was in a doubt whether I will surely join the BPO or not.
Here is the detail as far as I remember:-
I asked for the permission to come inside the room.
Got the same.
Me : Good Afternoon Mam
HR : Good Afternoon.
HR : Why are you applying for a BPO job, although you are a B-Tech with a very good academic score?
Me : I want to work and earn something. I think that having a job in hand before moving out of college is something different from others.
HR : Are you aware of the work culture of any BPO?
Me : Not Exactly.
HR : Will you be comfortable with the shifts?
Me: I said Yes, surely. Keeping in mind about the shifts, I appeaered for this interview.
(Then she asked some personal information about family background)
HR : You have excellent grades in your previous exams , why don't you try for software companies instead ?
Me : Mam, I am not yet eligible for those offers. If I will get chance in future, I will go for it.
HR : Do you mean that if you get an offer form some company you would not join us.
Me : Yes.
HR: Shall we proceed with your typing skill test?
Me: Sure Mam.
Then she gave me a note and asked me to type the same within a minute. I passed that test successfully. She was impressed again.
HR: Salary Expectations?
Me: 10,000 minimum.
She said I am offering you 8,000. But I negotiated with her and then at last we both agreed with 9,000. She discussed the details with me and she handed over me the offer letter.
HR: Hope to see you soon at workplace.
HR : Thank You . You may leave now.
Me : Thank You very much Mam for your time.

General Tips: It is not difficult to get into the BPO just show them that you are confident and fluent in speaking English.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Most of us have a wrong notion that HR is the person who could play a major role for us being selected for a job! But the truth is, they are just like filtering bodies who would never dig deep into your knowledge and they just check whether you fulfill the job requirements are not. In fact they would just check whether you are suitable for the job or not against the standards or criteria being pre-set by them. In my case, I had to be a Bachelor Degree holder in Commerce with minimum 2 years' experience in Retail and should be from a well reputed company, should have proficient knowledge in excel and be aware of basic Accounting principles. Since I believe I am good at Communications skills, I won her confidence. I was being pushed to get interviewed from Zonal Head of HR! Basically HR persons are very patient and humble by nature. He asked me questions regarding my family background; he inquired me regarding my early start at corporate way prior to the completion of my studies. I informed him that we were not financial stable and were been forced to work which hit his empathy and gradually I was been selected for further rounds. Remember friends, be real in interviews. No matter how desperate you are, never ever shade yourself out for the sake of others! Be the You!

The biggest mantra to excel any HR Interview round is a smile on your face while answering and show yourself to be very humble by nature.

Round: Test
Experience: Second Round – Assessments and TestsDear Friends, any Corporate would resort to a series of Tests and Assignments when they get overwhelming applications for the positions being offered in order to short list the most prominent and reliable candidates for further rounds. I had to clear Quantitative Aptitude Test, Accounts entries for the fictional transactions, Case Study (An FMCG Retailer wants to enter into Specialty format and found himself to be a loser), Group Discussion (Foreign Direct Investment allowed in Retail – good or bad) and Psychometric Tests.

Round: TECHNICAL INTERVIEW
Experience: Third Round – State Finance HeadRemember one thing friends! Big Corporates would take their own time to select you for the job since they tend to screen ample number of other potential candidates. So be confident and maintain patience. After a week of me getting selected for further rounds, I got a call from the HR person to reach out to Corporate Office at Richmond Road, Bangalore to get interviewed from the State Finance Head. Dear Friends, please do remember! Whenever you are being interviewed from the expert in the job you are trying, you should be very attentive to the point and be confident in your answers. It is better to accept not knowing the answer than to falsify the answers. And these experts would never look at your physical and mental attributes. All they want is, whether you have thorough knowledge of the process or not! They would not care your emotions and sentiments they are like soldiers pinning you for the correct answers!

I did an augmented study of what exactly a Commercial Manager does in Retail and got prepared for the same. HR Person left me at the Cabin. Well, the Finance Head was very soft spoken and by the way he looks I could easily make out that he was a Process Genius. He started barging questions on me. Since I was from the same domain I gave him all satisfactory answers. He asked me what and all activities I was into. I replied back with Cash and Bank Reconciliation Statements, Vendor Payments Management, Invoicing, Accounts Payables and Receivables, Inventory Control, Monthly MIS to Management, Inter store accounting, Purchase Orders Creation, Profit and Loss Account, Petty cash Management and so on. He asked me regarding the major challenges for a Retail Manager at present. I promptly replied with Shrink since it's an unavoidable loss and the reason could not be traced out in actual sense, then I highlighted Dump factor and the pressure on the Operations part to achieve monthly targets and the responsibility on the Commercial Manager to safeguard Company's assets and meeting expenses as per budget and standards.

He looks almost satisfied with my answers. He asked me – How would you like to see yourself in our company after 2 years from now. Friends, I would like to stop here. Remember; do not give unrealistic views at this point. Miracles would happen only in movies. So be real! I smiled and replied him back 'a most reliable person having expertise in Standard Operating Procedures and ready to take up any challenges in my professional life!

The key to win Expertise round is be prompt and attentive. Give prudent answers and interlink your answers to the most prominent aspects of your domain to prove your mettle.

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Fourth Round – Area Operations ManagerTired? Then think of my situation! Every time the HR person calls, I would be under the impression that they are going to tell me that I have been selected. But it was like an endless journey. Just two days after the interview, HR person told me to reach Cunningham Road Head Office to meet to Area Operations Manager!

Dear Friends, do remember! Any Interviewer who occupies a Role at Corporate in a Regional level, they are the Supreme. Why? Because the way they think and the way they act is far reachable! They are highly dignified and meticulous. You need to aim for the sky to reach their expectations. And your answers should accompany some facts to make them buy! His questions were of broader scope in nature! How do you ensure profitability and take initiative in preventing loss and wastage of resources? How do you minimize dump and control shrink? How do you manage the entire store when the Store Manager off duty? Which are the factors you consider while authenticating Invoices? How do you detect fraud and malpractice out of your scope? Well! Since I was well prepared, I did not exaggerate anything. I kept my cool and succeeded in giving the most reliable answers.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Fifth Round – Regional Head - HRWell, when I was being called to meet Regional Head HR, I was over joyous since I knew HR is your first destination in pushing you for further rounds and at the same time your final destination too in fixing up your emoluments! As expected, rather than asking any questions, he resorted to explaining me about the work culture, ethics being followed in their company, how employees enjoy working with them, what are their career growth plans for the Associates and the basic work environment being prevailed in their organisation. In turn I had very good wordings about the Company and highlighted that I would be glad to be one among their highly ethical family!
Tips: ConclusionAfter a week from the last round, the HR person called me up to the office and once I was there in the office, they informed me that I need to speak to City Business Manager and AGM – Finance! I was taken aback! But fortunately, it was just an appreciation talk and was nothing else. They were very nice to me and I was much obliged for being spent time with such a Corporate Gems! At last, after a valuable waiting of almost 2 months, I came out as a Commercial Manager! My dream had come true! I prayed God Almighty for his favor on me. I joined the Company on 24th Jan 2013 and served till 21st Nov 2014 and in between I got promoted as Operations Manager as well!

Dear Friends, Hard work with unprecedented dedication and perseverance to savor the taste of victory really pays! This is my third article in ISC and would cover up my Interview experience to ace as a Business Controller at yet another Retail giant in my next article!
