Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: We had 2 rounds of written test. 30 minutes of aptitude test and 30 minutes of technical test. All questions are of
multiple choice type only.
In aptitude test, 10 marks were for english verbal ability (paragraphs, synonyms, antonyms).
10 marks for quantitative aptitude. (be thorough with RS agarwal)
10 marks for data interpretation.
In technical test,
almost they covered basic questions from IS:456-2000,IS:800, (for eg: minimum reinforcement in RCC, rankine
merchant formula form IS: 800), IS:1893,pre-stressed concrete.
Tips: The questions that are asked are used by you regularly. No question will be beyond your knowledge. Only thing is that you have to give a glance of those subjects or codes atleast once before you sit for test. Then you will be certainly qualified.
Duration: 90 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: Panel consists of one or two people. They asked me about my B. Tech project, my area of interest in B. Tech and
M. Tech. Questions on Earth quake engineering, Torsion, Foundations, Steel structures, Structural analysis, the
code books I have used and some simple clauses of those codes. My technical interview went on for 35 minutes. First 20 minutes I answered very well. Later the panel asked too difficult questions and I could not answer them properly. But through out the interview I have shown huge amount of confidence, enthusiasm, good english and a smiling face.
Tips: As I already mentioned, please be strong with your basics of B. Tech and M. Tech. Come prepared with your B.Tech project. Many questions will be asked regarding that. If possible go with your project report also.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: They asked me some questions regarding previous day's pre-placement talk. They tried to know whether I was
attentive when ppt was going on or not. Then they asked me why TATA group, what do you know about TCE, Why
M. Tech, why this specialization, tell something about yourself, family, education. They asked me to list some of the
essential leader ship qualities, about hobbies. They also asked me to sing a song. (Because I have mentioned
singing as a hobby in my resume)
Tips: At last they will give you a chance to ask any questions / doubts. In a hurry or in tension please don’t come out
saying that you don’t have any thing to ask. Please ask something relevant to the company. Come prepared with a
question while preparing for the company by seeing the company's website.

General Tips: SUGGESTIONS TO JUNIORS
Just by seeing what I wrote above please don’t think that the interviews are tough and they are only for people who study regularly, or for those who have very good CGPA. Its nothing like that. After finishing your second semester in the month of april, you will have to go for summer internship till july and placements will start from august 1st (approximately). Utilize those 2 months of summer internship.
Skill Tips: please be strong with your basics of B. Tech and M. Tech.Daily study/revise your basics for 2 hours atleast,
from your B. Tech level starting from strength of materials to final year project work.

4 Interview Rounds

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Test
Experience: The technical test was conducted first. Questions were mainly from Power systems and a few from basic circuit theory. In fact the questions from power systems were taken from Wadhwa. As for the general aptitude test, time was the major constraint, the questions being relatively straight forward.Separate cutoffs were there for each test and calculators were allowed.
Tips: Be absolutely clear with the fundamentals of the subjects.
Duration: 75 minutes

Round: Technical Interview
Experience: The technical interview started off with details regarding my summer project at BARC, Mumbai. The project involved modeling and simulation of the nuclear reactor. I was asked the basic principles involved in energy conversion in a nuclear reactor. Further specifications of various subsystems like generator capacity, voltage, transformer ratings etc. were asked. The package(Labview) and the language(C) used for the project were also inquired. Questions regarding electric machines followed like 1. What would happen if dc is used in transformers? 2. Draw the output for the same. 3. What is the average efficiency of a T/F and an induction motor and what is the reason for the difference ?  4. Explain the various losses in an induction motor.Power system protection came next with questions like 1. Explain the protection schemes for induction motors? 2.Draw the protection scheme against inter turn faults.

Finally a general question was asked " what is the difference between a ceiling and table fan?" ( think about this)
Tips: Be absolutely clear with the fundamentals of the subject and build each new topic or subject from them as these are the things tested in an interview. Make sure you have a thorough grasp on the areas related to your projects. Remember that the interviewer is from a company, not from academia and so the chances of him asking you to solve a theoretical problem is very less. Have awareness about the real world apart from the ideality in textbooks as that is expected from an engineer.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: The interview started off as usual with "tell me about yourself". Some of the questions that followed were 1. What are your hobbies? I mentioned poetry as one. 2. Do you remember any of your works? 3. What qualities you look for in a person and prioritize them. 4. If you are absorbed in a company and one of your project has been delayed
by 6 months, what sort of work would you engage yourself during the 9 idle hours in the company? 5. One of your colleagues has gone on leave and you are asked to take up his/her work by your boss in addition to your already rigorous assignment. What would be your reaction and explain it scientifically. The further questions were on a
lighter note. Why did your SGPA fall in the 3rd semester? How much money do you get from your father monthly and how do you use it generally? Being interested in power systems why don't you opt for research like M.Tech/MS or a PhD? If provide an opportunity by the company to pursue higher studies will you opt? Any workplace
preferences? And finally any questions you would like to ask us?
Tips: Have confidence in your self as this is what separates a winner from a looser.
