Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: While applying in Valyoo I neither carried my resume nor my certificates. I went for the interviews empty handed but since I had some past experience of working in this sector I was pretty confident.

Round: Test
Experience: Since I wanted to get into a software company I focused more on C++ and data structures. For the aptitude section I studied some data interpretation problems and the likes.
Tips: If you are interested in joining a software company you must good knowledge of C++ and data structures. Further if you are interested in joining some firm as a software developer you must have good knowledge about OS and Application Development.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: For the GDs I did not prepare beforehand. Most of the GD that I participated in during the recruitment season eventually culminated into a fish market like scenario and hence even I did not put a lot of efforts in those GD’s.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: Much of my interview in Valyoo was based on my past work experience which was mainly managing and marketing several portals.
The interviewer asked me some questions based on marketing. He presented some situations and asked me to suggest some strategies to tackle those situations.
Tips: Just believe in yourself. Concentrate on your strengths and minimize your weaknesses in the discussions.
Also make sure that you know which profile you want to apply to. Initially I wanted to join a software company, but during the placement season I changed my mind and applied in trading companies and finally at the end I realized that my true interest lie in online marketing. Luckily this realization happened before the end of placement season.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: The company had come to campus to recruit for two profiles, software development and program management. However, I was interested in online marketing and was also aware about the work done by the company in this sector. I went over to the company officials and told them about my interests. They suggested that I apply for this profile off campus and so I did.

Interview Preparation Tips

Round: Resume Shortlist
Experience: The interview has a lot of questions asked on the basis of the resume; hence you have to be fully aware of the stuff you have written in your resume. Also in front of the interview panel you have to prove what you are saying by constantly giving examples from your resume.

Round: Test
Experience: The aptitude tests are similar to the CAT exam and one who has prepared for CAT should not have a lot of problems solving these questions.
The first round was the written test of one hour duration. The questions in the test were based on speed, distance, time, percentage and so on. There were few questions on vocabulary too. There was one question on C++ as well. I did not remember anything about coding, hence I mentioned it in the paper that I had done a course of C++ in the first year but did not remember much about it. Nearly 200 people had appeared for the written test out of which 18 got selected for the next round.

Round: Group Discussion
Experience: I had been part of groups in the campus during the past four years which were actively involved in organizing some GDs from time to time. Hence I did not have a lot of problems during the GDs. I was quite confident about my speaking abilities. However during the placement season I read some newspapers to keep abreast with the latest happenings.
The second round was the GD round. The 18 candidates selected to this round were divided into 3 groups of 6 each. From the 3 groups the company selected 1 candidate from the first group, no candidates from the second group and 5 candidates from my group which was the third group. Later on the supervisor told us about the reason for this imbalance in selection; he said that the GD of the second group which initially began peacefully eventually culminated into a fish market thus there was no productive discussion whatsoever. On the other hand in the GD of the third group there was a peaceful and productive discussion all throughout the GD, everybody gave a peaceful listening to what the others had to say and also everyone spoke politely. The topic of the GD was ‘Should the number of IIT’s be increased.
Tips: You have to be confident during the GD and also maintain eye contact with everyone. It is also essential that you put in some intellectual inputs in the discussion. Speak in a cool, confident and convincing manner.

Round: HR Interview
Experience: There are some questions which are quite frequently asked in interviews. I collected many such questions from the internet and prepared sample answers keeping in mind what reply the interviewer expects for such questions. The questions asked in the interview were based on my resume. The interviewer only asked some HR questions and no technical questions. During the interview the interviewer asked me the reason for this switch from the civil engineering to operations management considering the fact that I had a good civil engineering internships and projects in civil engine that could have got me a job in the core sector quite easily. I replied saying that even I am aware that securing a job in a core company would not be a tedious job for me, but over and above these projects and internships there are certain things mentioned in the resume like my extra-curricular activities which do indeed prove my abilities and interests in fields distinct from the civil engineering and I would like to try my hands in it.
Tips: It is necessary to practice the HR questions beforehand. You must prepare answers to the HR questions yourself and get them edited. You must also be clear about the kind of work of work you did in your internships because that reflects your practical experience.

College Name: IIT ROORKEE
Motivation: The company is in its start-up phase. We attended the PPT organized by the company. During the PPT we realized the complexity of the job. It was quite clear the person appointed to this profile would have to face all the problems and challenges in a start-up; that is what got me interested in this job.
