The only thing that was nice about uchumi is the free kind of work environment and occasional travel that included cash allowances for training or meetings at the head office though a little skewed to those who were based at the head office.

There are too many things I disliked about uchumi.i would write a whole book if i had the time Let me just begin by saying that there was too much politics at management level the most notorious being at the finance department where we had a mafia like cartel of individuals who spent too much time doing nothing and earning huge perks at the head office causing too many problems at the branches so that they can travell collecting huge allowances in the pretext of going to train staff at the branches...the most notorious was inventory department and buying department. Those guys had a way of misusing the system causing variances deliberately in the company erp system and shifting the blame to the branches whereby friendly branches would be labelled as performing well...when I say friendly branches I mean those branches that have kin related to inventory guys at the helm of branch inventory section.I mean if you are a back office supervisor and somehow your appointment to that position was based on some kind of relationship with certain people at the head office then....your branch will all ways perform well subject to creative accounting and manipulation of data right from the head office. To add matters worse , the inventory guys would wait like hyenas for the quarterly stock takes so that they can mess up the data and travel upcountry using annoying language that hurt peopke like some of us who had no kin at thd hq..language like we are going to bridge knowledge gaps. These are some of the things that killed uchumi .Funnily, internal auditors have no clue of the company erp system or have been appointed based on cronyism at the head office.part of the inventory team tasked with reviewing branch variances also have no idea of variance explanations so their main job was to travel and collect huge allowances on useless trips...travelling up to tanzania and Uganda for stock taking and variance reviews...I wonder what they did with the free allowance money.
