flexible solar cells for rooftops use plastic film filled with semiconductor to produce energy
- Researchers from the University of Sheffield and Power Roll develop flexible solar cells for rooftops and surfaces using plastic film with a solution processable semiconductor.
- The solar cells utilize plastic film filled with perovskite material to capture sunlight and convert it into electricity.
- The plastic film allows the solar cells to be flexible and conform to the shape of various surfaces.
- The design of the solar cells includes electrical contacts only on the back, maximizing the front surface for sunlight absorption.

Power Roll developing 12.8%-efficient back-contact perovskite solar devices
- Researchers from the U.K.’s University of Sheffield and Power Roll have achieved 12.8% power conversion efficiency in indium-free perovskite solar devices.
- The solar devices are based on a novel back-contact process and a slot-die coating technique, compatible with roll-to-roll manufacturing.
- Power Roll's technology involves coating perovskite material on a flexible PET substrate embossed with tiny micro-grooves, resulting in the highest efficiency demonstrated for this architecture in a perovskite PV device.
- The approach avoids scarce elements such as indium and enables low-cost, scalable, and high-throughput manufacturing.
