New Text Messaging Tool Tackles ‘Time Toxicity’ Among Cancer Patients
- Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania conducted a pilot study on a new text messaging tool aimed at reducing 'time toxicity' for cancer patients.
- Time toxicity refers to the extensive time cancer patients spend on treatment-related activities, impacting their quality of life.
- The study introduced a text-message platform for patient-reported outcomes and streamlined pre-treatment assessments for immunotherapy patients.
- Patients using the text messaging system saved over 60 minutes per visit compared to traditional methods.
- The streamlined process did not compromise patient safety or quality-of-life measures.
- The approach was inspired by expedited screening programs like TSA PreCheck and aimed to simplify cancer care processes.
- While some patients preferred in-person evaluations, the study highlighted the importance of accommodating individual preferences in care.
- The research team plans to refine the intervention based on feedback for wider implementation in real-world settings.
- The study emphasizes the significance of addressing time burdens in cancer care to enhance patient experiences and quality of life.
- By integrating digital tools into oncology practices, the study envisions a more patient-centered and efficient approach to cancer care delivery.

DeepSeek’s Safety Guardrails Failed Every Test Researchers Threw at Its AI Chatbot
- Security researchers from Cisco and the University of Pennsylvania have revealed that DeepSeek’s AI chatbot failed every test when tested with 50 malicious prompts meant to elicit toxic content.
- DeepSeek’s model did not detect or block any of the 50 malicious prompts tested on it.
- This indicates that DeepSeek's safety and security measures may not match those of other competitors
- DeepSeek's censorship of topics considered sensitive by China's government has also been easily bypassed
- Generative AI models, when set up poorly or contain weaknesses, can allow malicious actors to conduct attacks against them
- Jailbreaks, seen as one of the biggest security flaws, allow people to get around the safety systems put in place to restrict what an LLM can generate
- Cisco researchers used the HarmBench library to draw their 50 randomly selected prompts to test DeepSeek's R1
- Some sophisticated jailbreaks that bypass DeepSeek’s restrictions were tested by another company Adversa AI and all four methods worked flawlessly
- DJ Sampath, the VP of product, AI software and platform at Cisco, believes that DeepSeek's model lacks in safety and security due to unconsidered investment in safety systems
- DeepSeek has not yet responded to WIRED’s request for comment

Engineers create tiny switch to make the Internet faster and smarter
- Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania have developed a small and fast photonic switch to overcome the tradeoff between size and speed.
- The switch, smaller than a grain of salt, utilizes non-Hermitian physics to redirect light signals at incredible speed.
- It combines silicon with a special semiconductor material called InGaAsP to achieve nanometer-level precision.
- The breakthrough technology could improve data centers, enabling faster and more efficient handling of increasing amounts of data.
