Welcome to robot city
- Odense, Denmark is known for its rich history but has also become a hub for robotics, automation, and drone companies with over 150 such companies in the city.
- The city's success in robotics can be traced back to the Lindø shipyard, which collaborated with the University of Southern Denmark in the 1980s to develop welding robots.
- This partnership led to the establishment of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Institute, where the idea for Universal Robots was born, eventually acquired by Teradyne for $285 million.
- Universal Robots, based in Odense, maintains a nonhierarchical and collaborative work culture and invites others to work with its technology to create robotic solutions for various sectors.
- Teradyne also acquired another Odense-based robotics startup, Mobile Industrial Robots, which specializes in making robots for internal transportation.
- The success of these companies has attracted funding and business acumen to Odense's robotics cluster, creating opportunities for startups in the area.
- Challenges include attracting funding and sourcing talent in the relatively small city, but efforts are being made to address these issues, including supporting STEM education programs.
- The small size of Odense has advantages, such as drone-testing facilities at the nearby airport and the city's adaptability in transitioning from shipbuilding to robotics and automation.
- The former shipyard is now an industrial park focused on manufacturing large structures, while the university is developing centers for automation and robotics for industries like offshore wind turbines.
- Overall, Odense's robotics cluster is growing, attracting international talent and showcasing the city's evolution into a prominent player in the robotics industry.

Teradyne robotics group lays off 10% of global staff
- Teradyne’s robotics group has laid off approximately 10% of its global workforce. The figure includes a 6% reduction in Danish employees, where Universal Robots (UR) and Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR) are headquartered. Teradyne posts that its total robotics revenue for 2019 was $365m, with UR supplying $293m, and MiR $72m. Teradyne president Ujjwal Kumar cited “post-COVID slowdowns” for the decline in robotics market growth. MiR’s Fleet Enterprise was launched and offered fleet management for autonomous mobile robots.
- Teradyne Robotics reports ‘restructuring of sales, marketing, services’. Teradyne acknowledges that its robotics business was slow in comparison with its core testing business. The company is consolidating UR and MIR’s sales, marketing, and support teams. Last year, Teradyne launched a record number of new products to grow its serviceable addressable market (SAM). This included cleanroom-rated robots for semiconductor manufacturing and the MC600 mobile cobot. MiR Fleet Enterprise offered fleet management for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs).
- Universal Robots is moving from new products to new markets. Last year, Universal Robots opened its first production facility in China. The company also increased the payload capacity of its UR20 and UR30 arms through software updates, launched the MiR1200 pallet jack with artificial intelligence for pallet detection. 2019 was one of operations consolidation for UR and MiR, primarily focused on new products launches.
- Teradyne expects slower to flat growth in the first half of 2020. Growing labour shortages in manufacturing, agriculture, food processing, and construction should boost demand for automation. Universal Robots will continue exhibiting with its UR+ ecosystem partners, as seen in its UR Collaborate event earlier this month.
- The advanced robotics space, which is more collaborative and for high- to medium-mix jobs, can help where industries need to continuously redeploy people. In the old structure, we had an account manager for each one calling on the same OEMs (manufacturers) and distributors. We had an opportunity to eliminate some overlap, invest in customer service and expand regional coverage.
- Teradyne says UR and MiR's operations have been combined into a unified robotics group. The company is consolidating its go-to-market functions at the robotics level and consolidating its sales, marketing, and support teams. The restructuring increases efficiency and reduces the company’s robotics breakeven revenue from $440m in 2019 to $365m in 2020
- Economic uncertainty has taken a toll on the robotics industry. Teradyne owns Universal Robots A/S and Mobile Industrial Robots ApS, leading developers of collaborative robot arms and autonomous mobile robots, respectively.
- Growing labour shortages in manufacturing, warehousing, agriculture, food processing, and construction should boost demand for automation in North America and Europe
- Teradyne president Ujjwal Kumar cited “post-COVID slowdowns” for the decline in robotics market growth
- Last year, Teradyne said it launched a record number of new products to grow its serviceable addressable market. They included the MiR1200 pallet jack with artificial intelligence for pallet detection, cleanroom-rated robots for semiconductor manufacturing. Universal Robots also increased the payload capacity of its UR20 and UR30 arms through software updates
