The Webb Captures Spectra of Trans-Neptunian Objects, and Reveals a History of Our Solar System
- A study using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured the spectra of 54 Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs).
- The study reveals three categories of TNOs based on their spectra: double-dip TNOs with carbon dioxide ice, cliff-type TNOs rich in nitrogen molecules and complex organics, and bowl-type TNOs with dark and dusty surfaces rich in water ice.
- The different categories of TNOs formed at different distances from the Sun due to the existence of 'ice lines' in the early solar system.
- The study also connects TNOs to centaurs, identifying some centaurs as part of specific TNO types and suggesting the migration of TNOs inward over time.
