Could Chatbots Be the Answer to Loneliness?
- The risk of early mortality is 26% higher for those who suffer from loneliness, according to some studies. As loneliness becomes increasingly prevalent, could AI have the answer?
- AI Authority Peter Swain said that AI can play a supportive role, offering a perpetual listening ear or voice of comfort in times of isolation, but it should never attempt to replace human interaction.
- Research shows that whilst no chatbot can replace genuine human interaction, our brains respond to chatbots in a similar way to human interaction, offering a sense of being heard and understood, making them beneficial in times of isolation.
- Mental health is another area where AI is changing the game, offering a critical support network for those that cannot access traditional mental health services.
- Mental health experts warn the introduction of AI support does not warrant throwing out traditional care and therapy or oversimplifying the widely varied emotional needs experienced by individuals.
- The number of U.S. adults seeking mental health treatment has risen from 56 million to 59 million in the last year, with nir-by AI company Mira suggesting that technology has impacted this rise in a positive way.
- Chatbots can offer immediate support, helping to reduce feelings of isolation, but they must be deployed thoughtfully in order to avoid the potential for misuse and over-reliance.
- There are genuine concerns about forming deep emotional connections with a machine, as it could lead to diluting the quality of human connections.
- Chatbots can play an important role in offering valuable support, but they must be balanced with human interaction instead of replacing it altogether.
- In essence, chatbots positively impact loneliness and mental health care when used in moderation, in place of missed human connections, and as part of a wider toolkit for care and support.
