Chinese Cars Outsold British Cars In The U.S. Last Year
- Chinese automakers outsold UK automakers in the US last year, despite the absence of any actual Chinese automakers selling here.
- Cars made in China from Volvo, Buick, Polestar and Lincoln outsold all the cars built in the UK.
- Seven UK-based brands are on sale in the US market, which include Jaguar, Land Rover, Rolls-Royce, Lotus, Mini, Bentley and McLaren.
- Chinese-built cars were subject to a 100% import tariff last summer. In contrast, the UK-built models of all seven brands totaled just over 79,000 sales last year.
- The UK auto industry is flagging and appears to be positioned to cater only to wealthy customers.
- China managed to beat out the UK on US sales charts, with more than 80,000 Chinese-built vehicles sold in the U.S
- The biggest seller on the China-built charts is the Buick Envision, with mid-size SUV selling 47,340 last year, followed by Lincoln's Nautilus SUV, which recorded 36,544 sales.
- Automakers likely imported extra vehicles from China before the 100% tariff taking effect, so it is unclear whether these sales will hold up in 2025.
- Polestar plans to keep importing the Polestar 2 in some volume. But for high-volume products, automakers are expected to relocate production, and moving towards the US may not be feasible for the UK automakers.
