Tesla could lose its big EV sales advantage in Washington state if lawmakers pass new rules
- Washington state lawmakers are considering legislation that would allow Rivian, Lucid, and other electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to directly sell their vehicles to consumers and offer test drives.
- Currently, Tesla is the only manufacturer in Washington allowed to sell its cars directly, while other automakers must go through franchise dealerships.
- The proposed legislation would also require manufacturers to establish service centers, offer mobile vehicle servicing, provide warranties and repair options, and support training for zero-emission vehicle technicians.
- The Washington Clean Car Choice Coalition is backing the bill, citing high support from state residents and the need to make it easier for Washingtonians to own zero-emission vehicles and use electricity as a transportation fuel.

Aston Martin CEO: ‘We Need a Manual’
- Aston Martin CEO, Adrian Hallmark, is planning to create different variants on a single nameplate, following a similar strategy to Porsche. Hallmark hopes that Aston Martin can offer more than simple colour and trim packages, which would take around a year to certify. He also wants to encourage manual transmissions in his lineup, as he believes there is a real market for manual-transmission at the higher ends of the performance-car market.
- The manual he’s referring to is the six-speed used in the limited-run Valour and Valiant. Aston Martin hasn’t had a regular manual car since the 2019 Vantage AMR. Hallmark wants there to be cars with different suspension tunes and more power, suggesting an existing racing car could be brought back to the road. In the pipeline are hybrids, with the Valhalla hypercar being the first.
- Aston Martin has a partnership with Lucid for components for its upcoming EV, but it’s working out a different solution for its hybrid powertrain. The company is looking to expand its Aston Martin’s options list, giving customers more opportunity for personalization, which according to Hallmark, should aid in driving the top line and contribution to sales.
- Hallmark said he expects the EV to count for 15% of sales by the end of the decade, while pure-combustion and hybrid cars will account for the remaining 85%. Beyond the actual model variants, Hallmark wants to expand Aston Martin’s options list, giving customers more opportunity for personalization.
- Whilst it is suggested some variants may only be available in certain markets, Hallmark confirms the brand will electrify its front-engine offerings. Aston Martin shared its 2024 financial results at the end of April and Hallmark promised to go deeper into how he wants to turn the company into that “high-performance” organization.
