Australian Kaspersky ban triggered by detection in gov agency supply chain
- A formal ban on the use of Kaspersky Lab software by the Australian federal government was triggered by its detection in the supply chain of one government agency.
- The ban was initially advised in a letter from Prime Minister and Cabinet in 2017, directing non-corporate Commonwealth entities not to use Kaspersky products.
- A fresh email was sent to chief security officers in government by Home Affairs deputy secretary of cyber and infrastructure security group, followed by a formal direction in February 2023.
- A survey conducted in late 2024 revealed potential procurement and use of Kaspersky software at the federal level, as well as across state and territory governments and critical infrastructure.

Gov bans Kaspersky from its systems and devices
- The government of Australia has banned the use of Kaspersky Labs software on federal devices.
- The ban was issued by the Department of Home Affairs under the protective security policy framework.
- The ban was motivated by the security risks posed by foreign interference, espionage, and sabotage.
- The ban requires all instances of Kaspersky software to be removed by April 1 this year.

Malicious SDKs On Google Play And App Store Steal Crypto Seed Phrases: Kaspersky
- Cybersecurity company Kaspersky Labs has discovered a sophisticated malware campaign targeting cryptocurrency users through malicious SDKs embedded in mobile apps on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
- The malware, known as SparkCat, uses optical character recognition (OCR) tools to scan users' photos for crypto wallet recovery phrases and gain access to their wallets.
- The compromised apps have been downloaded approximately 242,000 times since March 2023, primarily targeting users in Europe and Asia.
- Kaspersky advises users to avoid storing sensitive information, such as crypto wallet recovery phrases, in their photo galleries and to regularly scan for and remove suspicious applications.
