GoodWorker is a unique combination of a hungry tech startup with a genuine social impact agenda.
GW’s ‘moonshot’ mission includes impacting the entire blue-collar workers’ ecosystem (jobs, learning, finance, insurance, and housing) by creating unprecedented value through next-gen tech. Integrated play.
The big, hairy, and audacious goal of democratizing access to better livelihoods for millions of workers comes from a fundamental insight.
Even after 25 years of internet access (and counting), life has not changed at the bottom of the pyramid in India or even across the world. Despite many well-intentioned global efforts, today’s deep-rooted economic inequality reflects how complex the problem is.
For the millions of blue-and-grey collar workers’ the painful questions remain the same:
- How do I find quality roles with trusted employers?
- Does the job align with my career aspirations?
- How do I keep improving my skills on the job?
- How can I own my digital identity and choose who and when accesses it?
- How can I operate verifiable credentials (salary slips, employment proofs, and other QoL documents)?
Big Opportunities come disguised as Hard Problems – Our Story.
GoodWorker is a joint venture between SchoolNet and LemmaTree (100% subsidiary of Temasek). Creating a disruptive platform from scratch requires a lot of patient capital and plenty of strategic perspectives. Temasek, one of the world’s most celebrated generational investors, brings just that vital element to GoodWorker.
Headquartered in Bangalore and founded in 2019 by proven tech leaders in the digital recruitment space, GW is intensively invested in a first-principles approach.
Going through multiple rounds of consumer and market research, the founding team identified and mapped the lives (and struggles) of blue-collar workers to create a seamless and familiar platform for this unique demographic (formally mid-literate but mobile-savvy) and, most importantly, a delight to use.
Technology Obsession at GoodWorker
At its core, GoodWorker is solving two deep technical problems – first, it is to leverage decentralized tech. that empowers billions, and secondly, how to adapt this technology in a way that includes a target audience that, while limited in its education, is heavily exposed to OTT, Social, and Gaming micro-cultures.
Solving these two problems uniquely through self-sovereign identity (SSI) and verified credential (VC) differentiates GoodWorker. Not hoarding data but building a platform where users own and control their data and data identities in secure, nontamperable, and portable ways is incredibly game-changing.
Mission: Democratize access to better lives by empowering a billion workers globally.
This is indeed an audacious & ambitious vision. And we are up to it. To realise this vision, we are taking a muti-pronged integrated approach, operating at 3 different layers.
First, we are building a ‘career builder marketplace’ consisting of multiple platforms targeted at blue collar workers – 2022 will see launch of a jobs classified platform & a social learning community. Together these platforms will engage millions of engaged workers during the entirety of their working lives: for learning, discovering jobs, getting help in order to actually start working but also for getting better even when they are already in a job.
Second, we want to do something completely seemingly incomprehensible; we will not own the worker’s data! The GoodWorker platforms will allow workers to create & fully own verified digital identities that are seamlessly portable externally while giving them consent management rights and privacy preserving capabilities: this will truly empower the workers to get access to other services by freely sharing their credentials with the external world.
Vision: How will we do this? By not locking the workers data into our data warehouses but instead using the rapidly emerging decentralised technologies from the Web 3.0 world; the birth of these technologies has been motivated by the realisation world over, that the big tech companies (read FAANG) have monopolised their
user’s data and held them captive, creating tight data silos disallowing users to leverage their own data across digital platforms.
Yes, this is counter intuitive. While all existing digital platforms derive their value from how much data they own & hoard, we believe that workers will value us over other platforms, precisely because we will give them tools to help them build & manage their digital identities (which we will never own and lock down with
us) so that they can freely share with the outside world for their own benefit.
Third, workers will then be able to plug these digital identities into a marketplace where they can access benefits across diverse areas like finance, health, public utilities, housing, government services and more.
We want to help better the lives of workers across the full spectrum of life services and not limit them to just
jobs & careers & this services marketplace will act as the third layer of our offering.
The 3 layered game-plan is what we believe will deliver our vision for our worker friends. Looks bold? It is.
