Can an AI chatbot help you quit smoking? It can, with lots of caution
- A new study from the Journal of Medical Internet Research has revealed that AI chatbots can help with smoking cessation, but only with caution. The study was the first to evaluate common user experiences for help quitting smoking with chatbots based on large language models, concluding that LLM chatbots can be designed to adhere to quit-smoking guidelines and counselling principles.
- The tests revealed befreeGPT, a custom chatbot that talks like a counsellor and offers advice on smoking cessation, did work to some extent, but not as accurately as is hoped. The team’s tests found that the chatbots adhered to public health guidelines in 57% of cases but 22% of the suggested misinformation came from quitting with vapes, gummies, necklaces, and hypnosis.
- This inconsistency could be addressed if AI chatbots were to follow medically accurate guidelines and expert-curated principles more closely. It was also found that the chatbots’ counsel often omitted crucial information, which could dictate whether a person could realistically quit smoking.
- Although a chatbot could pull up helpful information on how to quit smoking much more conveniently with natural language conversations, these chatbots can’t be solely relied on, and users are still encouraged to crosscheck with an expert or look up reliable information from health institutions and government agencies.
- Low information, incorrect word count, authenticity and complex vocabulary can cause deviations between machine-generated words and expert-written material. Thus, in their current state, it is difficult to solely trust the advice from an AI agent in a person’s phone or computer.
- It is essential to develop reliable and accurate AI systems, which reveal the importance of machine-based learning in dealing with complex health behaviours like smoking alongside encouraging close adherence to medically accurate guidelines and expert-curated principles.
- Digital Trend's spoke to Dr. Ahmad Ghayas Ansari highlighting that users should share all of that data with their doctor, or seek their advice if they’re not sure, as AI chatbots are helpful but still an intermediary.
- Other resources relating to tech and assistance in the quitting smoking process include the quitSTART app, which is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and provides tailored guidance, as well as challenges to help users quit. Meanwhile, those who wear smartwatches may also benefit from recent research surrounding an app that can detect when a user will reach for a cigarette and provide a pause report.
- When it comes to AI chatbots, however, users should tread carefully and check the advice provided with experts as well as reliable information from health institutions and government agencies.
- Lastly, Lorien Abroms, professor of prevention and community health at GW’s Milken Institute School of Public Health, suggested that chatbots can have a role to play in smoking cessation, with proper execution and training.
