Key Responsibilities of a DBA Manager

1. Team Leadership: Lead and manage a team of database administrators, including responsibilities for hiring, training, and performance management.
2. Policy Development: Develop and implement database policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure optimal performance, security, and compliance.
3. Performance Monitoring: Monitor and analyze database performance metrics, identifying and addressing issues or bottlenecks to maintain high efficiency.
4. Collaboration: Work closely with IT and business stakeholders to understand database requirements and devise solutions that meet those needs.
5. Upgrade Management: Plan and oversee database upgrades, patches, and migrations to ensure smooth transitions and system improvements.
6. Data Security: Implement and enforce data integrity and security measures, including access controls, encryption, and other security protocols.
7. Technical Support: Troubleshoot and resolve database issues, providing support to the team in addressing technical problems.
8. Industry Awareness: Stay updated on industry trends and best practices in database management to keep the organization aligned with current standards.
9. System Health Monitoring: Monitor the health of database servers through both automated and manual processes, recommending and implementing performance tuning solutions.
10. Problem Analysis: Analyze problems, anticipate future issues, and implement effective solutions to mitigate potential risks.
11. Environment Configuration: Oversee environment setup, configuration, proactive monitoring, and maintenance tasks.
12. Requirement Support: Support the development of long- and short-term database administration and design requirements.
13. Change Control: Participate in the change control process for all planned application and technical activities, ensuring controlled and orderly changes.
14. Reporting: Collaborate with report writers to provide necessary data for report generation and analysis.
15. Project Management: Manage full roadmap items, coordinating with other functional teams to deliver high-quality results on time.
16. Root Cause Analysis: Investigate and determine the root causes of software problems reported by stakeholders, implementing corrective actions as needed.
17. Database Design: Direct the organization of requirements and data into a usable database schema, including the development of ad hoc queries and scripts.
18. Administrative Tasks: Perform database administration and maintenance tasks, such as installation, configuration, backups, upgrades, and patching.
19. Code Review: Review SQL code written by application developers to ensure compliance with coding standards and performance optimization.
20. Performance Evaluation: Evaluate the performance of stored procedures, identifying resource-intensive areas and providing recommendations to developers.
21. Deployment Management: Create deployment and rollback scripts for database objects, ensuring smooth updates and recovery processes.
22. Indexing and Query Optimization: Analyze access patterns to propose optimal combinations of indexes, constraints, foreign keys, and queries.
23. Technical Enhancements: Proactively identify technical opportunities and enhancements while addressing major incidents in a timely manner.
24. Data Management: Manage and ensure the integrity, security, and retention of data, including administration of end-user accounts, permissions, and access rights.
25. On-Call Support: Participate in an on-call rotation to provide 24/7 support and perform off-hours maintenance as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Proficiency in database technologies, including MariaDB/MySQL, NoSQL, PostgreSQL (e.g., MongoDB, Cassandra).
• Extensive knowledge of current Linux operating systems.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Expertise in relational databases and backup/recovery processes.
• Competence in shell scripting and other scripting languages (e.g., Shell, Perl, Python).

Education and Experience

• Bachelors degree in Computer Science or a related discipline is required; relevant experience may substitute for formal education.
• At least 10 years of experience with relational databases such as MariaDB, RDS, MongoDB, Amazon DynamoDB, and PostgreSQL.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience with automation utilizing shell scripting (Shell, Perl, Python, etc.) is required.
