Job Description

Job Overview :
The Senior Manager Legal Claims is responsible for managing and overseeing the organizations legal claims process, ensuring that claims are handled efficiently, in compliance with legal requirements, and in line with the company's best interests. This role requires a strong understanding of legal processes, risk management, and the ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve claims effectively. The Senior Manager will provide strategic direction and guidance on legal claims, work closely with external legal counsel, and ensure that all claims are handled in a timely and legally compliant manner.
Key Responsibilities : 1. Claims Management & Oversight
  • Oversee and manage the full lifecycle of legal claims, from initial intake and assessment to resolution or settlement.
  • Evaluate and analyze complex legal claims to determine risk exposure, liability, and the appropriate course of action.
  • Provide expert advice on claims strategies, including settlement options and potential litigation risks.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and efficient handling of legal claims, including the preparation and submission of necessary documentation.
  • Manage a team of legal claims professionals, providing guidance and mentorship to junior staff members.
2. Legal & Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure that all claims are processed in compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Stay current on changes in laws and regulations that impact claims processes, advising internal teams and management on any necessary adjustments to policies or procedures.
  • Collaborate with legal teams to ensure all contractual obligations and claims-related risks are identified, mitigated, and resolved appropriately.
  • Develop and maintain claims management policies and procedures to ensure consistency, compliance, and best practices.
3. Litigation & Settlement Management
  • Oversee the litigation process for claims that cannot be settled amicably, working with external legal counsel to manage litigation strategies.
  • Review settlement offers and negotiate favorable terms with opposing parties, ensuring alignment with the company's interests and risk tolerance.
  • Coordinate the preparation of legal briefs, evidence, and any other necessary documentation required for legal proceedings.
  • Monitor and report on the progress of litigation and settlement negotiations, ensuring that deadlines and milestones are met.
4. Risk Assessment & Mitigation
  • Conduct thorough assessments of legal claims to determine the potential impact on the companys financial and reputational standing.
  • Provide strategic recommendations for risk mitigation and the implementation of preventive measures to avoid similar claims in the future.
  • Work closely with internal stakeholders, such as compliance, insurance, and risk management teams, to address claims-related issues proactively.
5. Stakeholder Communication & Reporting
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for senior leadership, providing regular updates on claims status, potential risks, and outcomes.
  • Prepare and present reports to the board, executive leadership, or relevant stakeholders on claims trends, resolutions, and any significant developments.
  • Collaborate with insurance providers and brokers to manage the organizations claims portfolio and ensure appropriate coverage.
6. Team Leadership & Development
  • Lead, mentor, and manage the claims team, fostering a high-performance culture that emphasizes accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide coaching and development opportunities for the claims team to enhance their knowledge and skills in legal claims management.
  • Develop and deliver training on claims-related processes, legal compliance, and best practices for internal teams.
7. Vendor & External Counsel Management
  • Manage relationships with external legal counsel, ensuring they are appropriately engaged to handle complex or high-value claims.
  • Evaluate the performance of external law firms and vendors, ensuring that their services align with the companys needs and standards.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with external service providers, ensuring favorable terms and cost-effectiveness.
Key Skills & Qualifications : Education & Experience :
  • A law degree (Juris Doctor, LLB, or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  • Admission to the bar in the relevant jurisdiction(s).
  • Minimum of [Insert Years of Experience] years of experience in legal claims management, with at least [Insert Years] in a senior or managerial role.
  • Proven experience in managing complex legal claims, litigation, and settlements, particularly in [industry or area of focus, e.g., insurance, corporate law, or commercial disputes].
  • Experience working with external counsel and vendors, as well as managing cross-functional teams.
Skills & Competencies :
  • Strong knowledge of claims management processes, legal frameworks, and industry regulations.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to assess legal risks and develop strategies for claims resolution and risk mitigation.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to mentor and manage a team effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple claims simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with legal research tools, claims management software, and other relevant tools.
  • Strong understanding of corporate governance, compliance, and best practices for managing legal claims.
