Job Description for Wood-Fired Boiler Operator

Job Summary:

Boiler Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and safety of wood-fired boilers used for steam generation. The operator ensures efficient combustion, proper fuel handling, and compliance with environmental and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Boiler Operation & Monitoring:

• Start, operate, and shut down wood-fired boilers safely.
• Monitor temperature, pressure, fuel feed rate, and emissions.
• Adjust air intake, fuel feed, and water levels for efficient combustion.
• Fuel Handling & Management:
• Load, store, and manage wood fuel (wood/briquettes).
• Ensure proper moisture content of fuel for optimal combustion.
• Maintain steady fuel feed to prevent overheating or inefficiencies.
• Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
• Perform routine inspections of boiler components, pipes, and safety devices.
• Clean heat exchangers, grates, and ash removal systems to prevent blockages.
• Identify and troubleshoot operational issues such as poor combustion, excessive smoke, or uneven heating.
• Safety & Compliance:
• Follow fire safety protocols and emergency shutdown procedures.
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding emissions and ash disposal.
• Conduct safety checks on pressure relief valves, fans, and control systems.
• Water Treatment & Boiler Efficiency:
• Monitor and maintain water levels to prevent overheating or scaling.
• Test and treat boiler water to prevent corrosion and scale build-up.
• Documentation & Reporting:
• Maintain logs of fuel/water consumption, boiler performance, maintenance, and safety checks.
• Report operational issues, maintenance needs, and efficiency improvements.

Qualifications & Skills:

• Experience in operating wood-fired boilers.
• Familiarity with boiler maintenance.
• Mechanical troubleshooting skills and ability to read gauges/meters.
• Physical stamina for handling wood fuel and performing maintenance tasks.

Education & Certification:

• Valid Boiler attendant 2nd class certification, issued by[Department of factories, boilers, industrial safety and health -  Karnataka]
