Job Description

SMILE (social skills, motivation, integrity, leadership, emotions) uses social emotional learning in fun and creative classes. Teachers are expected to use media and unique activities to help shape SMILE classes and allow students to experience in a dynamic learning experience.

Building a Positive Classroom Environment :

Create a Safe Space : Ensure that students feel safe and respected. Establish clear, consistent rules and routines.
Encourage Open Communication : Foster an atmosphere where students feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and emotions.

Explicit SEL Instruction :

Teach SEL Skills Directly : Use curricula or programs designed for SEL, such as CASEL's framework, which includes self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
Incorporate SEL in Daily Lessons : Embed SEL activities and discussions in your regular academic lessons.

Modeling SEL Skills :

Demonstrate Emotional Regulation : Show students how to manage emotions effectively through your behavior.
Practice Empathy : Actively listen to students and show understanding and compassion.

Creating Opportunities for Practice :

Group Work and Collaboration : Encourage cooperative learning where students work together and build teamwork skills.
Role-Playing and Simulations : Use role-playing exercises to practice social skills and conflict resolution.

Positive Reinforcement and Feedback :

Recognize and Celebrate SEL Skills : Acknowledge when students demonstrate SEL competencies, reinforcing positive behavior.
Provide Constructive Feedback : Guide students on how to improve their SEL skills with supportive feedback.

Family and Community Involvement :

Engage Families : Communicate with parents about the importance of SEL and how they can support it at home.
Collaborate with the Community : Partner with community organizations to provide additional resources and support for SEL initiatives.
