Job Title: Director of Online and Distance Learning Programs (ODL & OL)


Job Overview:

The Director of Online and Distance Learning Programs (ODL & OL) is responsible for the strategic leadership and management of the institutions online and distance learning offerings. This role oversees the development, implementation, and ongoing assessment of all online and distance education programs to ensure they meet academic standards, serve the needs of diverse learners, and align with the institution's mission. The Director will collaborate with faculty, staff, and external partners to create high-quality learning experiences that leverage the latest in educational technologies.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic Leadership and Vision:
    • Lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategy for online and distance learning programs.
    • Ensure that all ODL & DL programs are aligned with the institution's goals, mission, and values.
    • Promote a learner-centered, flexible, and inclusive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.
    • Establish short-term and long-term goals for ODL & DL programs, ensuring sustainable growth and development.
  2. Program Development and Management:
    • Oversee the design, development, and delivery of online and distance learning courses and degree programs.
    • Collaborate with academic departments and faculty to develop new programs and ensure the quality of existing offerings.
    • Monitor and evaluate course content, teaching methodologies, and overall student engagement to maintain program excellence.
    • Work closely with external stakeholders to build and enhance partnerships for joint programs, certifications, and special initiatives.
  3. Instructional Design and Pedagogy:
    • Implement best practices in instructional design and delivery for online and distance education, focusing on learner engagement, accessibility, and outcomes.
    • Support faculty with training, resources, and guidelines on effective online teaching practices.
    • Ensure that ODL & DL courses adhere to quality standards, including accessibility, usability, and alignment with course objectives.
  4. Technology and Learning Platforms:
    • Manage the selection and implementation of learning management systems (LMS) and other online learning tools to enhance the educational experience.
    • Stay informed about emerging technologies and trends in the distance education sector to ensure the institution remains competitive.
    • Oversee technical support for students and faculty to ensure smooth access to courses, tools, and resources.
  5. Faculty Development and Support:
    • Provide leadership and training for faculty to effectively teach in an online or distance learning environment.
    • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging faculty to adopt innovative teaching methods, tools, and technologies.
    • Organize workshops, webinars, and professional development opportunities for faculty in areas such as online pedagogy, assessment, and instructional technology.
  6. Student Support and Engagement:
    • Ensure that robust support systems are in place for online and distance learners, including academic advising, tutoring, technical assistance, and career services.
    • Foster a sense of community among distance learners by implementing engagement strategies like virtual study groups, discussion forums, and extracurricular activities.
    • Monitor student success rates, retention, and feedback to improve the learning experience and identify areas for intervention.
  7. Quality Assurance and Accreditation:
    • Oversee the continuous assessment and evaluation of online and distance learning programs to ensure academic integrity and high-quality standards.
    • Prepare and submit reports for accreditation bodies and ensure compliance with all relevant standards and regulations.
    • Implement strategies for ongoing improvement based on student feedback, assessments, and best practices in online education.
  8. Marketing and Enrollment:
    • Collaborate with the marketing team to promote online and distance learning programs to prospective students.
    • Develop strategies to enhance program visibility, increase enrollment, and improve student retention.
    • Analyze enrollment trends, student demographics, and market demands to inform program development and growth.
  9. Budget and Resource Management:
    • Develop and manage the budget for online and distance learning programs, ensuring financial sustainability and optimal resource allocation.
    • Seek out funding opportunities, grants, and other resources to support the growth and innovation of ODL & DL programs.
    • Manage staffing levels, ensuring appropriate personnel are available to support program needs.
  10. Continuous Improvement and Innovation:
  • Stay current with emerging trends in distance education, including new technologies, pedagogies, and student needs.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by utilizing data and research to inform decisions and innovations in program development.
  • Experiment with new teaching models, such as blended learning, competency-based education, and microcredentials, to meet the evolving needs of learners.

Skills and Qualifications:

Education:

  • A Master's degree in Education, Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or a related field is typically required.
  • A Doctoral degree is preferred for higher-level leadership roles.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in online or distance education, including at least 3-5 years in a leadership or management capacity.
  • Demonstrated experience in instructional design, curriculum development, and the administration of online programs.
  • Experience with accreditation processes, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance in higher education.

Skills:

  • Expertise in online pedagogy, instructional design, and adult learning theory.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and levels.
  • In-depth knowledge of learning management systems (LMS), digital content creation tools, and other educational technologies.
  • Analytical skills to assess program effectiveness and implement improvements based on data and feedback.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities to address challenges related to course delivery, faculty support, and student engagement.

Additional Qualities:

  • Visionary leadership with the ability to drive change and innovation in online and distance education.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, faculty, and staff.
