Technician

Job Summary:

The Door Access Control System Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of access control systems used to regulate and monitor entry into buildings and restricted areas. This position requires hands-on technical expertise in various types of access control systems, including key card systems, biometric scanners, security software, and hardware components such as door locks, readers, and sensors.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Installation & Setup:
   
• Install, configure, and calibrate electronic access control systems and related hardware components.
• Ensure proper alignment of card readers, sensors, door locks, keypads, and biometric devices.
• Set up system software, user databases, and configure security protocols (e.g., user access levels, door scheduling, etc.).
• Program control panels and integrate systems with other building security systems (e.g., video surveillance, alarm systems).
2. Maintenance & Repair:
   
• Perform routine maintenance checks to ensure systems are functioning correctly.
• Troubleshoot and repair faulty components, including access panels, readers, controllers, door strikes, and power supplies.
• Replace worn or broken parts, test functionality, and verify system performance after repairs.
• Update software and firmware to ensure compatibility with the latest security standards and patches.
3. System Upgrades & Enhancements:
   
• Assist with system upgrades or expansions, adding new devices, controllers, or access points as required.
• Recommend improvements or new technology to enhance system reliability and functionality.
• Ensure systems are scalable for future growth and evolving security needs.
4. Technical Support & Troubleshooting:
   
• Provide on-site and remote troubleshooting assistance for issues reported by clients or security personnel.
• Diagnose issues related to access control systems, such as failed access attempts, reader malfunctions, or software issues.
• Ensure all system failures or malfunctions are addressed promptly to minimize security risks.
5. Documentation & Reporting:
   
• Maintain accurate records of installations, repairs, and system configurations.
• Document all work completed, including maintenance schedules, system updates, and troubleshooting procedures.
• Provide clients with detailed reports of work performed, including suggested improvements or follow-up actions.
6. Client Interaction:
   
• Work closely with clients to assess their access control needs and provide recommendations.
• Provide training to clients or end-users on how to use the access control system, including card issuance, software access, and reporting.
• Ensure that systems are configured to meet client security policies and operational requirements.
7. Compliance & Security:
   
• Ensure all systems are installed and maintained in compliance with local security regulations, codes, and industry standards.
• Adhere to company policies regarding data privacy, system integrity, and secure access management.
8. Emergency Response:
   
• Respond to emergency service requests promptly to restore system functionality and prevent security breaches.
• Assist with troubleshooting and resolving access control issues during critical situations.

Qualifications:

• Education:
  
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Technical certification in electronics, security systems, or a related field is preferred.
• Ongoing professional development in access control systems and technology.
• Experience:
  
• Proven experience working with electronic security systems (2+ years preferred).
• Familiarity with various types of access control technologies such as proximity cards, smart cards, biometric scanners, and PIN-based systems.
• Experience working with security system software and networking, including understanding of IP-based devices and cloud-based access systems.
• Skills:
  
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Proficient with hand tools, test equipment, and security system software.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Knowledge of electrical and low-voltage wiring.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift and carry tools and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
• Comfortable working in confined spaces or on ladders.
• Ability to perform physical tasks such as bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.

Working Conditions:

• Travel to various client sites as needed.
• May be required to work after hours or on weekends for installations or emergency service requests.
• Exposure to standard construction site environments, including electrical hazards.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certification in access control systems (e.g., from vendors like Honeywell, Bosch, or Lenel).
• Familiarity with industry standards such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or Security Industry Association (SIA).
