Consultant Anesthesia & Critical Care - Department of Liver Transplant

Job Summary:

The Consultant Anesthesia and Critical Care (Liver Transplant) will be responsible for managing perioperative anesthesia, critical care, and post-operative recovery of liver transplant patients. This role requires a high level of expertise in both anesthesia techniques and critical care management, particularly for patients undergoing complex liver transplantation procedures. The consultant will collaborate with the multidisciplinary liver transplant team to ensure optimal care and outcomes for patients.

Key Responsibilities:

• Anesthesia Management:
  
• Provide anesthesia care for liver transplant patients throughout the perioperative period, including preoperative assessments, intraoperative management, and post-anesthesia care.
• Collaborate with surgeons and hepatologists to develop anesthesia care plans tailored to each patients medical history, liver function, and transplant status.
• Administer general anesthesia, sedation, and analgesia using advanced techniques suited for liver transplant patients, monitoring vitals and adjusting dosages as necessary.
• Ensure patient stability during surgery, addressing any intraoperative complications, particularly related to hepatic function, hemodynamics, and fluid balance.

• Critical Care Management:
  
• Provide intensive post-operative care for liver transplant recipients in the ICU, including monitoring for complications such as graft rejection, infections, and multiorgan dysfunction.
• Oversee ventilatory management, hemodynamic monitoring, and fluid therapy for patients in critical care post-liver transplant.
• Manage and adjust medications for sedation, pain relief, and vasopressor therapy in the ICU.
• Lead the management of patients requiring advanced life support techniques such as ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), if required, in collaboration with the multidisciplinary ICU team.

• Patient Evaluation & Preoperative Assessment:
  
• Conduct comprehensive preoperative assessments for liver transplant patients, reviewing their medical history, lab results, and imaging studies.
• Coordinate with the liver transplant team to assess the suitability of patients for surgery and anesthesia.
• Assess and optimize patients with comorbid conditions (such as cardiovascular, renal, and pulmonary diseases) before transplantation.
• Multidisciplinary Collaboration:
  
• Work closely with hepatologists, transplant surgeons, intensivists, and nursing teams to ensure coordinated care and a smooth transition through various stages of treatment.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, offering expertise on anesthesia, sedation, and critical care management.
• Education & Training:
  
• Provide teaching and training to residents, junior consultants, and nursing staff on liver transplant anesthesia techniques, critical care protocols, and perioperative management.
• Stay updated with the latest developments in anesthesia techniques, liver transplant practices, and critical care methodologies.
• Quality & Safety:
  
• Ensure adherence to hospital protocols and best practices in anesthesia and critical care.
• Participate in audits, case reviews, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care outcomes in liver transplantation.
• Assist in developing and updating clinical guidelines and protocols related to anesthesia and critical care management for liver transplant patients.

Qualifications:

• Educational Qualification:
  
• MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) or equivalent medical degree.
• MD in Anesthesia, or equivalent post-graduate qualification in Anesthesia and Critical Care.
• Fellowship or advanced training in Liver Transplant Anesthesia or Critical Care is preferred.

• Experience:
  
• Minimum of 2 years of post-graduation experience in Anesthesia and Critical Care, with at least 1 year of focused experience in liver transplant anesthesia.
• Experience in managing complex critical care scenarios, including liver transplant and associated complications.
• Familiarity with advanced techniques such as extracorporeal life support (ECMO), advanced ventilation strategies, and organ support therapy.

• Certifications:
• Board certification or equivalent in Anesthesia and Critical Care.
• BLS/ACLS certification.
• Certification or training in liver transplantation or related fields is preferred.
