A Deck Cadet is an entry-level position in the maritime industry, specifically onboard a merchant ship or a vessel
Deck Cadets are typically young individuals who are undergoing training to become qualified officers, specifically in the deck department
They work under the guidance of experienced officers and learn the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue a career as a Deck Officer
Responsibilities and duties of a Deck Cadet may include:Watchkeeping: Deck Cadets are assigned to regular watchkeeping duties on the ship's bridge, where they assist officers in maintaining a proper lookout, monitoring navigational equipment, and ensuring the vessel is on the correct course
Navigation: Under the supervision of senior officers, Deck Cadets participate in voyage planning, chart corrections, and plotting the ship's course using navigational charts, GPS, and other modern navigation aids
Safety and Security: Deck Cadets are expected to be familiar with emergency procedures, life-saving equipment, and firefighting appliances
They actively participate in safety drills and onboard safety routines
Mooring and Anchoring Operations: Deck Cadets are involved in the mooring and anchoring procedures of the vessel when it arrives or departs from ports
Cargo Operations: Depending on the type of vessel, Deck Cadets may be involved in cargo handling operations, including loading, discharging, and stowing cargo securely
Maintenance: Assisting in the general maintenance of the ship, which includes painting, cleaning, and routine checks of safety equipment
Bridge Teamwork: Collaborating with other bridge team members, including the Captain, Chief Officer, and other watchkeeping officers to ensure safe and efficient navigation of the ship
