OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the communication functions of a telecommunication or computing system.

OSI model has 7 layers: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application.
Each layer has a specific function and communicates with the adjacent layers.
The layers are designed to be independent of each other, allowing for easier development and maintenance of network protocols.
Example: When you type a URL into a web browser, the application layer sends the request to the transport layer, which breaks the data into segments and adds addressing information. The network layer then adds routing information and sends the segments to the data link layer, which adds physical addressing information and sends the data to the physical layer for transmission.
