There are two main types of braking systems: disc brakes and drum brakes.

Disc brakes use a caliper to squeeze brake pads against a rotor to slow or stop the vehicle.
Drum brakes use brake shoes that press against the inside of a drum to slow or stop the vehicle.
Other types of braking systems include regenerative brakes, which convert kinetic energy into electrical energy to recharge a battery, and emergency brakes, which are manually operated and typically act on the rear wheels.
Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are also common, which prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking to maintain steering control.
Some vehicles also have parking brakes, which are separate from the main braking system and are used to hold the vehicle in place when parked.
