Bukholz relay is installed in the oil conservator tank of the transformer.
It detects the faults like overheating, overloading, and short circuits inside the transformer.
It works on the principle of gas detection and oil flow detection.
It sends an alarm signal to the control room in case of any fault detected.
It also stops the transformer from further damage by tripping the circuit breaker.
It is named after its inventor Max Buchholz.

ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर में बुचोलज़ रिले (Buchholz relay) लगाया जाता है ताकि ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर के अंदर होने वाली खराबी से उसकी सुरक्षा की जा सके. बुचोलज़ रिले, ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर के अंदर होने वाली दो तरह की खराबी को पहचानने के लिए बनाई गई है: धीमी खराबी, तेज़ खराबी. 
 
धीमी खराबी में मामूली इंसुलेशन की खराबी शामिल है जिससे गैस पैदा होती है. वहीं, तेज़ खराबी अचानक शॉर्ट सर्किट या गैस पैदा करने वाली खराबी से हो सकती है जिससे तेल का प्रवाह बढ़ जाता है.
फायदा

बुचोलज़ रिले का इस्तेमाल, 500KVA से ज़्यादा रेटिंग वाले ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर में किया जाता है. छोटे ट्रांसफ़ॉर्मर में इसे आर्थिक कारणों से इस्तेमाल नहीं किया जाता.

Whenever a minor fault occurs inside the transformer, heat is produced by the fault currents. The produced heat causes the decomposition of transformer oil and gas bubbles are produced. These gas bubbles flow in the upward direction and get collected in the Buchholz relay.
