The circulatory system, also called the cardiovascular system, is responsible for transporting blood, oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body. It consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels.
The heart functions as a pump and has four chambers. The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs for oxygenation – this is called pulmonary circulation. The left side of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body – known as systemic circulation.
The blood vessels include arteries, which carry blood away from the heart; veins, which return blood to the heart; and capillaries, where exchange of gases and nutrients occurs at the tissue level.
The heartbeat is regulated by the SA node, which acts as the natural pacemaker, and ensures coordinated contraction of the heart chambers.
This entire system works together to maintain tissue perfusion, deliver nutrients, and remove metabolic waste.
