In a petrol engine the mixture of fuel plus air (petrol plus air) is compressed in compression stroke while spark is built by spark plug while in diesel engine only air is compressed in compression stroke while diesel is injected with the help of injector at the end of compression stoke .  Petrol engine works on the basis of Otto Cycle while a Diesel engine works on the basis of Diesel Cycle
